New rev counter for the race car

Recommended Posts

Few years ago, I had the stupid idea to buy a new rev counter with some new features like tell tale, shift light etc.
Now, lying around since 3 years or so, I started now to modify the instrument cluster to another classic look.

A bit of challenge to change the place of the speedometer, but at the end of the day, I like it.

nice work!  i have found the progressive LED shift lights i built and mounted on the top of the steering column to be awesome.   rarely look at the tach anymore.

I did that once.  Well worth it for a car that sees the track, if you're not a regular.

I'm down to the single big yellow light, set 750 before redline.

I don't think that was a stupid idea at all. The workmanship looks excellent, and a shift light is nice when you are Road racing. I like the windshield wiper and light switch elongator's  B), and early dashboard style -very period  Correct.  Are you running classic races at the Nuburgring or other similar events in Germany. Please tell us  (2 L motor with twin 45 Webers ?, which gear box etc. etc. )and send pictures so we can live vicariously through you.

 Best regards, Peter

@ anthony I do not like the rollcage at all, but it is a DMSB certified Heigo cage and I do not really want to change it at the moment. The Cage was new when the rules were changed in 1993. It is not allowed to modify a certified cage. If so, you have to modify the whole cage to the actual "Selfmade" rules. If so, I do not want this cage as my basic. We can talk 100 hours about safety and rules I think.
@jrkoupe I do not want to drill a hole in the dash. But the next idea is to remake a 3piece dash in fiberglass, covered new with Porsche/BMW imitation leather, so I can drill holes for the cables and do not destroy original part, but .....in 100years.....
@mlytle I do motorsport more than 25years and never used shift light, it is a test. Back in the days (FIA G2 Period), they had nothing. But I tested the car in the snow with rain tyres, had fun and it works:-)))
@tisalover Yes N-Ring with or without Nordschleife and all the "big" tracks. You can find a few photos in Articels->Events->Hockenheim
Engine 2Liter at the moment with 45 Weber, Gearbox is variing. Getrag 235/6 or 235/8. If every race gearbox is damaged I use the normal 235/5. LSD ratio variing 3,64, 3,9, 4,11 or maybe shorter but not on a roadtrack.
@jgerock I never used a 4 speed gearbox, but the 5 speed cable is also too short. It was necessary to drill a hole on the right side of the steering column and behind the instrument cluster.

Your dash is  just the ALPINA cars circa 68/69 and looks very good.

The  dash on this early '70 uses a fabricated sheet aluminum cluster with a somewhat similar layout. The mechanical tachometer has a tell tale (but no shift light) and is centrally located while an oversized oil pressure gage is located on the driver's right where the tach would normally be housed. A speedometer, required for inspection, is to the left in place of the combination gage.

When I moved mine,

I holesawed the metal 'underdash' and

was able to relocate the cable such that the

4- spped cable worked.  With a 245 od, too.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
