Model:: 2002 Tii Touring

Price:: 19000.00

Location: : Highlands Ranch, CO

I saw this ad and thought I would pass it along.  A 1971? BMW 2002 Tii Touring in Polaris (Originally Inka) over Black Interior.  Sharp looking car, lots of Alpina bits, E21 Recaro seats, front clip replaced?  Could be the right car for someone.

Wow!

VIN 3421892 shows up on the BMW 2002 Club of Columbia's VIN decoder as a European 2000 tii touring manufactured during the 1971 calendar year:

http://www.bmwclasicos.com/vin.php

I never quite understood when or why the early tourings were 2000's and not 2002's. Lots of people on this forum, however, understand BMW's reasoning, and the timing, behind this issue.

I just plain like this car -- even though I like it more for the "tii" than the "touring" -- and am not bothered by the Inka-to-Polaris color change. I'd love it as a Polaris car, and return it to Inka somewhere down the road -- maybe a long way down the road. The description sounds good and believable. The ONLY thing that makes me nervous is the price: that's a lot of car for $19K in today's market (I'm comparing it to the dodgy Agave tii for $15K and the nice-but-not-too-nice Polaris tii for $40K). Don't put money down unless you see the car, or your "agent" sees the car, and title in person!

OK, there is one more thing that does bug me: the seller would trade it for a VW Bus or a Chevy Nomad. WTF?

Good luck,

Steve

Thinking about taking a look at this.

Original unmolested, yet late nose and aluminum intake runners. Runners could have been an upgrade I guess. Seats could be put back to stock.

Yes, Art, but both useable and attractive today. I take "original unmolested" with a grain of salt! For me -- and I'm not really a potential buyer here -- the square taillight nose would go away with the Polaris paint, which is to say....later, perhaps much later. The block purports to be original -- an important factor for me, and one that usually can't be remedied if it's not original -- so I'm willing to forgive the aluminum intake runners, and the E12 head that now probably accompanies it. After all, I can come up with a "correctly-dated" 121 head and plastic runners.

Best regards,

Steve

I think the VIN is wrong.

The Germanish plate on the front was familiar to me and it led to VIN 3420136.

Car was in CA (on Ebay) in 2006 and the Seller stated the original colour was Colorado. The front nose panel has obviously been replaced, probably when the colour changed.

Quiet a few pre '74 02's in Germany had "late" front nose panels fitted, as, I believe, early ones went NLA for a good while.

The car appeared in CO in 2007 and was (is still?) owned by faq board member "KrautByTrade".

When this showed up on BAT I noticed some inconsistencies, some mentioned already.  Also, those look like US '73 front bumper over-riders, probably installed when the nose was replaced?  The one that really concerns me is the WA state collector plate.  No mention in the ad or this thread regarding a WA history.  Not a big concern if the seller is willing to engage and provide an explanation.  As others have said, it's a lot of car for the price assuming a PPI reveals no hidden ills.

Thanks, Les, as always!

Looks like there is some real due diligence needed on this one! When the price is too good....

Lots of skeptics here.

This car is owned by a good friend of mine. Exceptionally well maintained and by an extremely knowledgable 2002 person. He has had this car for almost ten years. It is a gorgeous car. Also owns a pristine 88 M3, as well as daily driver BMWs. He put a lift in his garage to store this and the M3. He's owned 02s for the last 15 years. I will send him a message, he doesn't come here that often anymore.

The nomad is his dream car. Ever priced out a cherry 56 Nomad?

    BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

    Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

    History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

    In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
