Anyone recently bought a new rear panel roundel for a pre74, the one that sits there with the 2002 emblem? If you order the one on realoem/penske, etc,  is it the raised letter version, or a new plastic version?

I did have a new one for the front and it was the raised letter version, don't think I like it,

Steve...the small one on the rear panel, pre-74, not the rear deck lid. Is it still a raised, enameled piece, or did bmw go to the plastic on the little one also...I was under the impression that they quit making the raised ones (at all) and all new ones were now plastic...

I bought a raised one from RogersTII. It looks good though I am struggling to remember if it is a rear panel or hood emblem.

yup.  The flat one I purchased from Steve (# 51 14 1 801 560) has raised letters and edges.

When 02s came from the factory, they all had the stamped and painted, all metal roundels with raised letters and dividing lines between the colors.  E-21s also had the raised letter roundels; I don't think the plastic-faced ones were used until the E30s came out.  

 

I was under the impression that both the large size (hood) and smaller size (roundie rear panel) were now available from BMW Classic with the raised letters per the original; don't know about the squarelight trunk lid roundels though.  Drop Blunt a line; he'll know for sure.

Bought mine few years back from BMW - looks now 40 years old so i'm not impressed. Plastic one awaits in clove compartment...

yes  I wasnt clear   the pre 74 rear tail panel roundel is raised  74+ trunk mounted is smooth
