Returning tii caliper cores: do or do not, there is no why

So in the grand master wisdom of yoda (yes a subtle star wars ref) I ask the following.

I bought reman'd tii calipers from RockAuto and paid a $18 core charge for both. The calipers were cheap enouh at $36 each. Gotta love RA when they make it so cheap and easy.

That's the back story.

I have the cores which weigh 10 lbs each approx and would cost close to if not more than the core charge to return them.

I had hoped the return postage would be paid by RA, but not that I can see in the process.

Keep or keep not?

Haven't tii calipers been NLA in the past?  If so, I think I'd hang onto 'em, especially if you're gonna keep your car for awhile...you never know.  And there are several places (White Post Restorations, etc) who can drill out and sleeve your calipers with brass sleeves and make 'em good as new...but they're gonna need cores to work with.

If everyone stops sending in their cores, then there won't be a supply to rebuild...

Just saying..

yeah kind of figured the prices are cheap cause the supply is there. Pay it forward by returning them some might say. Just seems counter intuitive to pay more in shipping than the cost of the refund.

Just thinking.

Maybe I'll start another thread on to rebuild or not to rebuild WWYD?

But what do I know

Hi,

first of all i will take them if you want to get rid

of them. i am in philadelphia pa.

second,  recently when i have purchased

calipers they are not correct for the tii and

need to be ground down to fit properly.

this has now occured on three sets of

rebuilt units.

what i have found is that the out board side

of either side of the calipers is not rebuilt

original parts but a recasting of the outer half

installed on the old inner.  therefore the parts

end up being incorrect size for the job and

needing adjustment to fit.

additionally i have found consistantly that

the rebuild repackaging is reversed and

this means ordering opposite sides if only

getting one as a repair.

sending back a core may help keep some

stock available but what i see is the parts

are so old the companies just do not want to

deal with them any more.

I've purchased rebuilt tii calipers and also rebuilt my old ones using kits sourced from BLUNT.   If yours aren't too crusty (known condition) and the bleed valves are good, then I vote to rebuild them.

You are correct - they are really heavy but you can stuff them into the USPS Priority mail box.."if it fits, it ships".

+100 on This.   My latest rebuilt tii calipers had to be ground to fit onto the strut.  The halves look mis-matched.

Truth say you, adjust mine needed be.

Hub rub on the outer housing. Nothing a little grinder could not handle. Although exact fitment is what you expect, but for the price no complaints.

Hmmm?

The cheap price is not indicative of supply in this case.  There are very few left in the systems, I foresee them being up-front core only in the not so distant future.  Some of the rebuilders have a few left, but most the major wholesale warehouses (who source from the rebuilders) don't have many left at all.

As for the miss-fitment some have seen.  At the rebuilders they are simply using the wrong face.  Have seen the same on Volvo calipers (and non-vented face bolted onto a vented back).
