Weber 38/38 Tuning

oh, yes... it works.

there are simply advantages to the stock air cleaner, compared to the little K&N style.

it takes a little fiddling around to fit a stock unit, but it was one of the more satisfying things I have done to my car... so I think everybody should do it!

Edit-- I just read through some of that long thread about stock air cleaners and remembered that after market manifolds may not have tapped holes to mount the stock air cleaner bracket on the driver's side.  I did come up with an alternative bracket, which can be seen here.

It looks like the kit has everything you need manifold gaskets carburetor and air cleaner  The 38/38 requires a different linkage or you can modify yours Didn’t see that in the photo. You can buy one ready to go from Ireland Engineering relatively cheap.

Oh you may need some hoses and nipples to connect the water running through the manifold Should be easy to source at a local auto parts store

Looking at the photo again, you do have the linkage
Great, I wouldn't have been interested if it wasn't a direct fit. I don't mind picking few hoses & fittings but I didn't want to have to start ordering things. Would you have any idea what this package is worth? I could only one similar kit online and it was $550. Does sound about right?

Yes that seems fair  You could modify a stock manifold to accept the bigger carburetor and save a little money but it’s hardly worth it.  The stock manifold would benefit by having the runners ground out to mate with the intake ports of the head and the manifold in the kit may already address that improvement

So yes the kit would be fair

If you buy it from a reputable shop for the M10 as I understand it should be set up to work right out of the box with proper jets and ir correctors.

Sweet! I am buying it off Craigslist but he claims that this kit was specifically designed for the M10 and should perform well right out of the box. Obviously a seller is going to say anything so I just wanted to confirm here first!

Thanks!

Check the jets and see if they’re close to the setups on this thread to make sure it’s at least been tinkered with for M10 or a 4 cyl. There are some guys running stock M10s with the 38/38 but it’s very hard to get a smooth idle because it’s pushing a lot of air for a stock motor. My dads car has one on a stock bottom end w a cam and it has a really unsteady and high idle. My car has a fully built motor and I got it to idle well. Some friends of mine have had success getting it to idle well but you have to really richen up the mix.

No two engines are the same, so you should expect to do some adjustments. Luckily, they’re not difficult to make if you have a screwdriver around.

If you want a 32/36 Weber (the most common upgrade for a stock 02), I’ve got one that I’d sell to you for $100 or something. Will go on the stock manifold and should be easier on the stock motor. Could use some cleaning but it delivered fuel to my engine for 10000+ miles under my ownership and many more before I had the car.

I’ve had a sage old BMW specialist say he was concerned that the stock air filter may restrict air flow for a 38/38

Probably not enough to affect power in any way that matters at all.

It MIGHT change tuning, as in, if you pulled off your RamFlow and stuck it on, you might end up rejetting the transitions just a bit.

It might actually be good for a bit of torque.  It certainly would be better for air filtration.

I went ahead and picked up the kit. I think the deal was just to good to pass up. Im gonna confirm all the jet sizes before I install but this kit is supposed to be tuned specially for an 02' so hopefully I'll be good.
Apparently this is the "outlaw" version. Lucky I don't live In CA! db7dd1e9cb9b46782ed65afa6c8c52e6.jpgc5b3b6904bb6861586143ee0d2af9422.jpg

and noise reduction... the parts diagrams call it an "air silencer" for a reason.

it is also a benefit to inhale cool air...

plus, I think the stock assembly l@@ks cool.

especially the lid from a '76.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
