I don't even know what I'm looking at, but there's nothing so wrong with that thing that an hour with the gas welder, a six-pack of good beer, and a couple of diamond files can't fix.

Worm gear from steering box?  guessing the missing chunk may give a strong "on center" feel to the steering....

The steering box 'worm' and roller gear are hardened, extensively. I've never looked into it, but wonder if such repairs could be made using the process camshaft folks call 'hard welding' (hardfacing, I think). Then again, box cores can be had for not much money...

We have a shop here in Dayton that builds up crankshafts and other high-wear areas with "hard weld" and then turn the journals down to standard size.  I would think that the same could be done to your steering worm so long as the surface could be blended with the surrounding metal.

 

Or just get a rebuilt box.

Wow.  I've never seen one that bad, and I've taken apart a couple that felt like rocks in a box...

 

Given the complexity of the shape, I'd say that repair would be prohibitive at best,

and well- nigh- on- impossible at worst...

As others have identified, it's the steering box worm gear.  Thankfully this was from a spare box I was going to rebuild and swap, hopefully the one in my car is good.
