Tii Clock Repair Revelations

Recommended Posts

Actually, after I repaired my clock and it stopped working again, I spoke to the folks at The Clock Works and they seemed to imply that the VDO and the Kienzle were the same.  I believe Keinzle is a very old clock maker and perhaps VDO gets the mechanism from them.

I have no affiliation with them, but had excellent service.  www.clockwks.com and give them a call

Paul, many thanks for posting this... I was pulling my instrument cluster to today to install the '72 year/model correct replacement, and I thought:  "Heck, I might as well keep going and take on the clock at the same time!"

Pulled the console and got the clock out easily enough, but I shudder at the prospect of getting it back in!

I kind of like Mike Wooldridge's solution of NOT installing it on the bracket, but I'll give it the "old school try" armed with Paul's handy "knurled nut placement tool"! :)

I have a related question:

When I pulled the instrument cluster, I found that the dealer had done a funky job of wiring in the clock.  They piggy-backed the clock power off of the tacho power and cluster perimeter lamps. Most likely they didn't have a second 3-pin connector for the clock.

It will work, but I've read on other threads that the clock is actually powered off of another three pins on the right of the back panel Circled in blue):

I have verified that they share the same 12V/Ground circuit, so I'm inclined to separate the two circuits per the original configuration.

My question:  Does anybody out there have, or know a source for an extra 3-pin plug to use on the right-hand pins (and connector pins)?  I can jury-rig a connection, but I'd rather have the real deal.  I have seen a thread where somebody had a friend 3-D print one, but haven't found the thread yet.

Next step is to pry off the bezel and work on the clock!  Here goes...

I am not sure why BMW wired the clock in the cluster to the round set of pins on the cluster (circled in blue) and used the triple half moon pins (circled in red) for the ti and tii clock.  FAQr Tsingtao can hook you up for clock works.  Something about the lights for each one.

The pic is the back of one of my clusters and the tach is fed from the far right connection (ringed in blue), and thus the tii clock from the connection ringed in red.

This also the connections shown in my Touring Handbook for the tii. Hopefully you can make the pic bigger.

Anyone know why these stop working, as I've been told there is no internal fuse,

I attempted to repair 2 late Tii clocks with the circuit board.  One was dead electrically.  With no circuit diagram and no parts list, no hope of doing anything.  Also, the magnetically suspended balance wheel (pendulum) got out of whack.  It could not be adjusted back in place.

The other was good electrically.  Two of the nylon gears were not engaging correctly.  Some disassembly, readjustment....  It is still running and keeping good time.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
