Under Hood Labels And Stickers

Recommended Posts

After looking through the James Taylor 2002 Restorer's Reference book, I got to wondering about the placement of under hood labels on the 2002. They seem to be in various different places, depending upon the car illustrated. Does anyone know to what extent the BMW factory used any consistency in the placement of these? For example, I have seen a variety of cars with the paint code label just inboard of the metal VIN tag, yet many do not have them there. On my unrestored '73, the paint code label sits on the inner fender at the fright front of the engine bay. I would be interested to see other cars' factory sticker placement to see if things were consistent or more random than we imagine.

There has been much discussion here about this topic.

Two things we agree on.

1. BMW was inconsistent in placing these stickers,

2. but the placement is generally the same for year and destination, i.e. early cars sticker placement, 72 and 73 and the square lights are generally the same.  Also, US cars are different than EURO cars.

So make sure you compare year and destination when comparing.

Thanks, Bill. I had a feeling there would be differences in Euro spec cars, but figured there was likely some uniformity in similar cars from the same year originally shipped to the USA.

Suggestion:  there are enough original cars on the FAQ from each year that if the owner of an unmolested car from each year would take a photo of the sticker placement in his/her engine compartment (and hood underside) this could be posted in an FAQ on the board for all to use.  I know the tii's have a few different stickers from the carbureted cars, how about automatics?

Excellent suggestion, Mike. I was going to make this request, but you beat me to it. And Bill, a search for more details on the topic only yielded our recent discussion.

To the FAQ: If your car remains original under the hood, please post a photo of the engine compartment and inner hood showing the placement of the stickers and tags. Thanks.

Manufactured: April 23, 1976

Note: this car is within the February-to-May batch of U.S.-spec cars that left the factory without a metal riveted-on VIN tag on the right inner fender.

These are my stickers prior to paint on my 73 registered 72 build rhd 02 touring. Oddly It had two fuse location stickers one in english and one auf deutch. The service sticker was on the bonnet in the lhs top to the best of my memory but the bonnet was changed for a new one about 10 years ago. Ive since painted the car and replaced all the stickers. I kept the origional inconsistencies as theyve been part of the car for 40years. Including the slightly off square positioning although more by happy acident than any particularly pedantic behaviour. Im putting down the inconsistencys to deliberate in the same way a medieval tapistry alway have deliberate mistakes like hands with six fingers as only god was perfect ect. 02s were, after all pretty close to perfect!

Hi-

If your Malaga is truly unrestored, how have you detailed the engine bay without ruining the decals? I only ask because I've just found a low-mileage '73 (in Malaga no less) which has a very clean engine bay that would only require a detail and not a repaint. The decals are in about the same condition as yours, with the color one having been applied in the same location.

Don't know what would ruin the decals other than too aggressively cleaning in there. I use a damp cloth with no soap to wipe down the finish, then dry it as I would on the exterior. I have probably waxed inside the engine bay twice in over 16 years of ownership. Have done nothing more than that.

Good to know!

I've read all sorts of recommendations on the forum in addition to what I've gleaned over the yrs in general. I just haven't been fortunate enough to find something so original until now, so I just want to proceed with caution. With your car being so clean and original, I couldn't think of a better person to ask.

Thank you-
