Help Checking Out Bay Area 02Tii

Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I'm new here.

When I was a kid, my father had a 1968 2002, which he picked up at the factory in Munich and drove around Europe before shipping it back to California. He sold it in 1976. To this day, it's the only car I ever hear him regret selling.

As a gift to him (he's now 80), I'd like to buy him a 2002, ideally a tii. There are a few for sale in the SF Bay Area, but I want to make sure I have them checked out by a qualified technician before I make any offers.

So, that's the question -- who in SF would you guys recommend for a thorough check of a 2002 tii?

Thanks in advance for your consideration,

Fred

I'm glad you are able to do this for your father! Welcome to the 02 madness.  I'm sure there are many folks and resources that can provide assistance.  Just remember to purchase the best version possible for the amount of money in your budget - then budget more $$ for work  :) that is required.

Above all, ask questions and take pictures so we can help.

Kudos to you, Fred!  That is a wonderful thing you are doing.

I would love to see a photograph of him standing next to his "new" 2002.

Regards, Maurice.

My grandfather and I put together a list of the cars he had owned over the years, and to my surprise, one was an "Orange BMW 2002".

1973 tii, agave, since 1992

1973 tii block 2763759

1967 Mustang GT fastback, since 1986

1999 Toyota 4Runner, 5 speed, ELocker, Supercharged

Fred -

Good stuff.  I am in the middle of my project and will help any way I can.  I second both shop recommendations.  I am in the Cambrian Park portion of San Jose.  Let me know the specifics on the tii you are looking for and I will keep my eye out for you.

Thanks, everyone, for your recommendations and kind words. I'm interested in two options that are for sale now in the SF Bay Area. One is very stock, the other has seen a lot of "improvements" (but I've seen it, and it drives well and the owner seems truly devoted to it):

1972 BMW 2002tii Classic - $16990

1972 BMW TII - 5 Spd - Malaga - Many Upgrades - $16500

OK everyone, I took the plunge. My dad now is the proud new owner of a '72 tii in Malaga. I've urged him to join the forums. Please be nice to him, he's going to need your help! The speedometer is slow, and the alternator light goes on when the parking lights are on. Oh, and the front left headlight comes and goes. But it runs great -- I just drove it from SF to Oregon. It was an unreasonable amount of fun on highway 1. :-)

Congratulations to you and to your dad!

I am certain that you will remember the day you gave him the car and the look on his face the first time he sat in it very fondly!
