Confused By Carburetors

Hi Everyone

 

Hope that someone can help me

 

I am restoring my first 02. I have to change the carburetor. I understand that my best option is a Weber. I am really confused on which kit to buy; I want more power and good performance but I do not want to have too much trouble with the installation, manifold, etc.

 

What are your suggestions? I understand that good options are the 32/36 and 40 with manual choque right?

It depends on what kind of manifold you have now. If you have a solex twin barrel carb you can bolt up a weber 32/36 directly.

Most people go that route.

Thanks, i am really new at this so I think that tomorrow I will take a pic of the actual carburetor and start from there right?

 

If I have other type or carburetor is there any conversion kit? Why not the 40 Carburetor?

On a stock car a weber 38/38 downdraft or weber 40 downdraft would be overkill. Dual weber 40 side drafts are sometime used. That would require alot more work. The weber 38 or 40 downdraft carb will not fit without modifications to the manifold. So if its stock the 32/36 is a performance upgrade and will bolt onto your stock manifold. Do a search for carb upgrades. It's been discussed here to death.

Thanks  will make some more research. I dont think I want the dual carbs... (too expensive right now I am starting the restoration)

If I go with a 38 I guess there is a conversion kit to avoid major mainfold work?

If u go 38 you will have to either get a new manifold or "hog out" your stock manifold. So the 38 will fit on it. You will have to do at least exhaust and maybe a mechanical distributor for optimum results. Just bolting on a 38 when everything else is stock isn't ideal. You will be over carbed.

So my best option is the 32/36, That way I do not need to make extra work and it will directly fit the manifold right? 

 

If I decide to buy a 40 kit, does not the kit comes with everything needed for the conversion? What basic things should I modify so I dont stay overcarbed?

40 kit is more carb than a 38. Usually people go with a 40 when they have exhaust, cam and ignition work. It again needs a hogged out manifold or a new intake manifold. You probably would be advised to go with a linkage kit. The 32/36 is a direct replacement for the stock carb and will provide a performance boost. Get a sync link to turn it from a progressive carb to a dual synchronous carb.

Just a quick google search came up with this article by redline weber. Talks about the differences between the 32/36 and the 38.

The choice really is about what's in your car and what u plan.

32/36 is the best choice for ease of installation. Has good economy and offers a performance boost over stock.

38 is the best choice for modified engines or stock engines that you plan to modify. This won't be as easy as an upgrade. Will require manifold modifications or a new manifold. Will not give good economy but will give a good amount of performance.

I have a 38 and it's a blast! I have a Tii distributor, piano top pistons, headers and exhaust, new manifold, and 292 cam.

If you are thinking the 38 because you think the 32/36 isnt a good carb you are wrong...SCCA rules require the use of this carb in racing for some 2002 classes (ITB?) and because of this its been sorted and there is ALOT of info on how to tune and get the most out of it performancewise....
