Electronic timing vs. points

My mechanic is installing a "008" distributor in my '72 Tii. He is suggesting I change my points for electronic timing. Any opinions??? I don't know enough about it to make an informed decision. Thanks.

Only downside of points I can see is they fail more often and are not as efficient at higher rpms mostly.

I'm keeping the points anyway.

The MOST important thing for me, can you drive through an electro magnetic pulse (EMP) blast with electronic ignition? NO! So stay with points!!!!! THE FUTURE COPS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP YOU!

Use a CD (capacitive discharge) ignition box together with points. With a CD setup, the points only carry 12 volts, as they're the relay that triggers the CD. Points last indefinitely--the rubbing block will wear out before the points do.

Bonus--if CD box fails, you can revert to a standard points/coil system in a few seconds by turning the CD box off.

Been using that setup for years (1969) with little or no trouble.

I used a Mallory Hyfire until I converted to EFI and distributerless ignition. It's in my spare parts now. Always worked well. Worked with points then later with Pertronix.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Just changed out the points in my 008 and was satisfied both with the result and also had a good time doing it and learning about how to do it. I understand that is not for everyone.

Sounds like Mike's set up is the best of both worlds.

I vote for staying with the points, but concede that you probably have to be a more inclined towards doing your own work with them
