I also own a Sahara, and from looking at it, I know that there are at least 4 shades of that color. I did some touching up a while back and the computerized color analyzer didn't even come close to matching the original.

Truly beautiful car! I wish my '73 looked half as good. The only opinion that really matters is yours... Bur since you asked, paintless dent repair and spot repair where needed to avoid rust. Color matching would be the hardest part, but a good paint shop should be able to get a match. Once again, beautiful car!

Simple, repair damage, leave wear. Lots of good advice here, hope to see this car at the Pgh Vintage GP.

Hi Neal-

Here's my 02 cents worth...

The good news is that Sahara is not a metallic color. So matching old to new paint is somehat easier than with, say, polaris or fjord. Having said that, unless you're prepared to do all the work and spend all the money needed to make the body pristine, you'll never be happy with a full respray. Newly painted dents are still dents...

As I recall, much of your paint is pretty good. So I'd support the previous recommendation to have the car professionally detailed and then touch up what you can. At most, respray the nose because, as noted above, there are natural break/cut lines that will hide any differences between old and new paint.

We'd all love to see you spending more time in the tii. Do whatever it takes to make you want to drive it!

Original cars or "preservation cars" have been gaining momentum in the market, " Sports Car Market July 2011" One good reason to drive it the way it is.

If you paint it, you will cringe every time you hear a rock bounce against your new shiny surface.

Professionals are predictable; it's the amateurs you have to watch out for, you never know what they are gonna do!

Robert Cruz mentioned the R&T article from March 1981 where my car and original owner were profiled. First picture is the article, second show my attempt at a close up of the license plate, and finally a shot of the original blue plate I possess.

Holy Crap! That article is one of my favorites and was reproduced for the Brooklands series 2002 review book (I own a copy). I thought the notes about a PO installing Corvette distributor advance springs sounded familiar.

Congrats on owning such a nice, low number tii. I see your PVGP 2009 window sticker, but I cannot recall seeing your car.

That is because I took the coupe....I really enjoy both cars very much. Very different experience driving each. After returning from Vintage, I have been driving the Tii almost daily and it is such a fun car and really enjoy it. The only event I have take it to was last fall's '02 Fest at Lime Rock. I intend on driving it to the Vintage at Sarasota, assuming the wife and kids don't give me too much flack...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
