8 inches...

wide, is what i want my wheels on my 67 1600 to be. Right now i run 205s with no rubbing, and i would like to upgrade wheels to something 8 inches wide, and then run a 205 on it.

Yes, i know these questions get asked 10 times a day, but:

What is the highest offset and backspacing i can run on an 8 inch wide wheel before i hit the strut tube? I want the wheels sunk in as much as possible, and if they don't fit, I'm not at all opposed to pulling the fenders. Im going with custom made steelies, so literally anything is possible. Yes, i know 8 inches is wide, thats why im going to stick with 205s, which works great right now. Any idears?

Thanks a ton!

Nick

Planning on 15X8, because tires are cheap and available. Like i said, i'll pull the shit out of the fenders if need be, i have a friend with a fender roller/puller.

Seriously though, i'll make em fit! I just need to know the highest offset i can do. Right now I'm running 13X6.5 with 13 offset and 205s, and i experience minimal rubbing at full lock when i hit bumps.

Has anyone on here ever had X8 wheels before on a stock fendered car?

Oh, and i forgot to mention that in the rear i run 10mm spacers with no problem. So it's pretty much a 13x6.5 et 3 with a 205, and no rubbing, and thats with half rolled fenders.

Im still convinced with the right offset a 15x8 is possible.

Just be careful that you don't over-tire the car.

Excess steering effort at low speed and tramlining can get pretty tiring over the long run.

Still, being a slave to fashion does have a certain appeal, so I understand.

If it makes them feel any better, its fully stripped and on it's way to becoming a drift/rallycross car. Its also far from original, as it has a 2002 engine and tranny swap.

How did your 15x8 work out for you in the rear? What size tire? What size did you run in the front? Did it rub (up front) and were your fenders rolled/pulled?

Sorry for all the questions, but thanks for your help!

Thanks for that!

Im too tired to understand most of that right now, But i did read that a 225 will fit with fender "modification". And I'm completely okay with that, as i'll only be running 205s, less "modification" will be needed.

check a tire fitment reference chart to see if those tire will fit a rim that wide. If the rim is too wide, the tread won't lay flat on the ground--it'll be concave--and thus lose grip. A 205 tire is the maximum width for a 5 inch rim, and you're proposing one three inches wider...

I used the link bellow and entered my curent tire and rim size on one side and entered what I wanted to go with on the other. This helped me make my decision. I am running a 15 X 8 rim with a 0 off set and this gives me a 4.5 inch back spacing because the rim is 9 inches wide. This fits great with flares.

I've got 15x8 et15 sportmax XXR501's on my turbo car, they clear the strut tube by a few mm. Et17 or 18 would be the absolute max and most likely rub. I do not have camber plates on the car. The rear is a concern too, I can't remember exactly where but I only have a few mm of clearance in the rear too.

The car has turbo flares and 225/50's which barely fit under the turbo flares. I'd be interested to see pics/the tires size of your 13x6.5's and how much the fender is rolled. I've got 13x6.5 epsilons, et12 or 13 with 175/70's and they rub like a mofo.

BBS RA's on a roundie - 6" wide et 33 offset in front, 7" wide et 35 in back; 195/50's in front, 205/50's in back; Eibach springs; stock fender openings with the beads rolled.

Clearance to the front struts was about 5-7mm at the inner wheel lip, tire touched the inner fender on full lock, and would foul the fender lip going into a driveway with the wheels turned if the suspension bounced; clearance to the rear trailing arm was about 5 mm at the inner wheel lip, & the fender lip had to be rolled a bit to prevent the lip from fouling the tire with the suspension compressed at all.

Seriously doubt you're going to be able to stretch stock sheet metal far enough to cover any tire that's wide enough to fit properly on an 8" wide rim - bear in mind that lots of postive offset imposes significant additional loading on the wheel bearings, suspension and steering components and can cause bearing and/or suspension failure.
