  1. Emma, you're all right! Never heard of her before, but she's easy to like. She needs to post on the FAQ so we can learn more about her 02.
  2. Street racing is illegal and will get people killed. Besides, lately whenever I even think of going fast I see a cop car and then another a few minutes later. I might as well not attempt it. I had gone nearly 20 years w/out a ticket and now I have gotten 4 in about 2 years. The law of averages caught up with me as my driving habits did not change. (these were run of the mill speeding tix, no street races or anything wild)
  3. I don't remember seeing Bill "Spaceman" Lee pitch in person, but I was at World Series game 5 in Cincinnati & saw Luis Tiant pitch vs. my Big Red Machine. I hated to see the Reds lose that night, but he was impressive. I took my grandfather, a huge baseball fan, to his only World Series game. He talked about that game the rest of his days. The "Spaceman" was quite the celebrity in the 70's.
  4. Guten Tag fer sure. Looking forward to it! Just thinking of how big a caravan we might have heading down there. Need to get a few things sorted out on the 02 and then off to Winston-Salem. Good luck making ready for the hordes of vintage bimmerphiles.
  5. Mine had no filler neck rust or gas tank problems. The 5-speed transmission needed work twice for popping out of 5th on the highway & me getting tired of trying to hold it in place at 70mph. Timing belt was replaced at 60K, 120K, & 180K per the recommended interval. The starter went out later in my ownership. It went through mufflers and exhaust components pretty quickly. Also went through batteries and the battery cables more than I liked. My Corolla rusted like crazy with our salty winter roads. The 89 was the last year for carb'd Corollas which was OK until we drove it up into the Rocky Mountains. It had no power at altitude. Fuel injection (starting in 90) would have been much better. I remember the salespeople thinking I was a cheap $#&@ for wanting the very stripped-down version on their lot. It was there for the ads that read: "you can own a 1989 Toyota Corolla for as little as **** dollars per month!"
  6. I meant to say I toured the Saturn plant in 1997 when a friend of ours worked there, so it was a personalized factory tour.
  7. I bought a stripped-down silver 89 Corolla off the lot in Sept. 89. It was my 1st 4-door car. Our first child was born on 6-11-91, so it was in anticipation of his coming. Pretty good car. I sold it in the summer of 2001 for $1000. It needed new tires & the whole exhaust system at the time. What sold it to the young teenaged girl: a new Aiwa stereo unit w/CD player. It was rusty, but it ran great for those 199,000 miles! I took a chance on buying a 98 Saturn SL-1 & it's been more reliable & absolutely rust-free for 9 yrs. now. Sometimes Detroit builds a good one for you. I had toured the Saturn Spring Hill, TN plant in 88 and was impressed with what I saw. I had toured the old Camaro/Firebird plant in Norwood, OH yrs. ago and it was a nightmarish place inside.
  8. Hooligan: No need to be modest or self-conscious re. your 02. Everybody is glad when another person joins the 2002FAQ community. New blood = new enthusiasm & new friends. Anyhow, you're welcome to join the Ohio 02 owners anytime you'd like. There are a number of us in the Cincinnati, Dayton, N.KY area. I can't speak for Mich. but come on down sometime!
  9. There is one called: bmw320i.com that I have looked at sometimes. I got my 5-speed transmission kind of indirectly through that site.
  10. I had hoped to be there, but it is a very busy weekend for our family. Also we had 6 in. of snow so my 02 had best stay in the garage. If the early winter (warm) weather had continued, it would have been very tempting to go. "Lessez les bon temps roulez!"
  11. Sometimes I think of changing my interior to black. I think it would look better in a lot of ways. But, I haven't seen any Saharas w/a black interior, however.
  12. Michael, damn, that's beautiful! I have been in Calif. only once (San. Fran.) I wish I could drive your roads out there. We have nice twisties and hills and covered bridges, Amish country, etc. -- but no wine country & no oceanviews.
  13. 02MonsterMike: try to link up with me and the fellows from Indianapolis when we drive down to Winston-Salem. We would like to have you convoy with us!
  14. Welcome to 02's and the associated affliction. Some ideas re. your car's issues: Headlight out -- did you check fuses & the headlight bulb?; Soft brakes -- bleed the brake lines, check the brake lines for breakage/leaking, check out the master cylinder too; Sloppy 4-speed --- wear & tear over time means you need a shifter rebuild -- kit is avail. from Bimmer parts. Parts are available, so as long as you keep rust at bay, you will have yourself a viable 02.
  15. Andy: I got him riled up too! I asked him who F@#$ed up the car and then asked if $195.50 would be enuf. I told him he should give the car away to somebody who would take care of it and stop abusing it. I got some laughs. He must wonder why me?
  16. That one should be a giveaway. Put it up for grabs rather than taking all that abuse on Ebay. I want full disclosure -- how long's it been sitting around getting dusty? & Why?
  17. That is so true. When I say that I have a BMW 2002, I quickly add that 2002 refers to the model not the year. Then they say: "that must be nice to afford a BMW like that!" thinking that it's a super luxury 2002 5-series or 7-series. When I explain it again, they look like they'd rather give up than figure out what I meant. It's great when they know exactly what a 60's/70's BMW is.
  18. Golf is so much FUN. You will have a great time with it. What is your cars orig. color? Just don't let anybody call it monkey vomit green. Pet peeve, haha.
  19. I Hate coffee. So, I save a lot of time and money at Starbucks. In fact, I have only been in there with my wife who can actually understand the million possible coffee orders one can make. Diet Coke keeps me awake during my 12 hr. shifts at night.
  20. Mine has the typical tan interior, but I have thought that a conversion to a black interior would be fun. I have not seen any with a black interior so far. We Sahara owners stick together in defending our right to remain Sahara.
  21. Help to throw an even better MW 02 gtg later this year. I am hoping for a really good turnout and even more fun.
  22. I agree w/the time capsule idea. When a stock 1600-2 turns up, people are quite interested in it & less interested in a modified/molested one. When we had a gtg at Shaker Village in KY, the 67 1600-2 with us was a true museum piece. We all loved it! That one had been a Calif. car almost all of its life. During our drive with freaky cold (& snowy) late April weather, the heater would not engage since the slider control was frozen in the off position due to lack of use --- ever. It was still 6 volt and there were many little idiosyncratic differences that the esteemed Mike Self was noting for us. It would have been a good seminar at Techfest even. How about a project blog on your 1600?
  23. I don't have a special account or a stash of hidden cash. We do joke about things purchased using the secret black hole budget. It's a reference to secret government projects that aren't approved by the legislative branch, but somebody's gotta go do it anyway, so they have secret projects w/secret budgets. It could also be called: don't ask, don't tell.
  24. The newest issue of Roundel has Mike Self's article about the MT inka tii. He drove it when he went to Lime Rock. I am biased, but his write-up is the definitive one. He bought a brand new 02 in '69 & has kept it running strong to this day, therefore he has quite a perspective on new 02's and well-used ones. Great stunt pulled off by the BMW guys. I don't expect Ford to build us a mid-60's Mustang, do you?? Or a 60's VW Beetle??
  25. My 02 has responded happily to more use/attention. Dieter was a bit sullen at first, but new brakes, shocks, battery, guibo, tii manifold, valve adjustment, window seals, shifter rebuild, & a lot more use, = one happy, reliable 02. I have never been stranded. Biggest problem was a dud battery with not enough CCA's which was easily fixed. Here the car will rust in winter snow/slush, so a winter beater is wise. It's great that you cannot get shut down by some failed electronic module. The 02 usually gives you fair warning that something's wrong and that parts & svc. are needed. Newer cars are amazing in some ways, but the visceral experience of driving a machine has been lost. My kids love the smells: oil, gas, vinyl, horsehair, old carpet, etc. You don't get that in a new Toyota. They also like how it feels quite fast at 50 MPH on a country road w/the windows down! Short answer is go for it.
