  1. For Sale: (4) E30 “Bottle Cap” wheels with wheel centers in very good condition, mounted with Pirelli P4000 195-60-14 tires (80% remaining tread). Plus an additional wheel w/o wheel center in excellent condition. Local pick-up or delivery in the SF Bay Area. Make offer.
  2. Polished valve cover; early 2002 version with “BMW” and 4 horizontal bars; internal casting mark “68.” $60 plus shipping.
  3. It's my understanding that the orange "BMW Parts" sticker was used on the Model 73 (1974-1976) and not on earlier cars.
  4. Is the cover with "BMW" block letters and four horizontal lines correct for a '73 model? Was the paint necessary to cover cosmetic issues with the original finish or was the original finish painted and you just refreshed it?
  5. I checked out the parts catalog diagram to see if here was any indication for orienting the seal and it would seem to show the lip attachment to the seal base biased towards the front. I've flipped mine to this position to see if it makes any difference; if not I'll do a test and add some generic weather stripping to the cowl to see if that makes any difference; if there's still warm air from the heater core after all that its back to square one.
  6. Yes, the heater valve lever is installed correctly; elephant trunks and side seals are in great shape.
  7. After rebuilding my heater valve and checking that the cable controls fully close the valve, warm air still vents into the passenger compartment when the heater box dampers are opened. Assuming the valve is working properly, warm air is leaking from the engine compartment and past the seal into the cowling area. Upon checking the seal, the cross section is not symmetrical. The flap is off-center and mine was positioned with the flap biased towards the rear, causing the flap to curl towards the front. I’ve reversed it to see if that improves the sealing, but if anyone knows if there is a correct bias for the seal flap (front or rear), please chime in. TIA, Ken
  8. I understand the DMV will issue current tags for your old CA blue plates if you have the patience and fill in the right forms.
  9. I think its fairly common to use of the strut brace mounting bolts as a ground termination for the battery. It is in my case and other photos I've seen of similar installations. I don't believe Sam means that he used of the strut tower bolts securing the shock to the top of the tower.. that would be a no-no. I second Steve with the use of properly mounted terminal posts in the engine bay. When I acquired my '02 last year, I found the positive "terminal' consisted of an unmounted and uninsulated bolt/nut clamping the bundle of wire spades together; The ground was a straight run cable (no flex provisions) between the bell housing and brake booster mounting bracket with loose connectors from the repeated engine movements/vibrations. Needless to say, both deficiencies were quickly corrected.
  10. Yes, you need to ground the engine block with a cable or strap of similar size to the one you removed.
  11. Yes, One Lap is fun even if it’s only for the morning C&C at Bon Air. The event can bring out some of Marin’s finest cars as well as quirks. We’ll BOLO Derby at Vintage Oaks next month.
  12. Looks great! I’m sure you’re thrilled with the results. It’s time to Go and Show... One Lap Marin is next Saturday is a good first and fun outing. Another ‘02 would be welcome (last year there was only a single ‘02 hanging out with the Alfa’s).
  13. Trico Classic 15”... look period correct, fit and work welll... I have them and a bargain for the price compared to $50 from our typical specialty suppliers. Apply some Rain-X to the windshield for safe measure and wet weather visibility is as good as it gets.
  14. When troubleshooting my temp gauge, I found small lock washers placed between the back of each gauge and the printed circuit board by a previous owner’s effort to get better electrical contact between the gauge casing and ground circuit. A direct ground wire from the gauge mounting studs to the chassis serves better.
  15. Backdraft... William Baldwin as Brian Macaffery drives a Malaga roundie throughout the film... can’t get it started and is late on his first day of work at the fire station... ...and Justice for All... Al Pacino is a lawyer driving an ‘02
  16. Update... The root cause for the temp gauge pegging was a bad ground. The thermostat checked out with a hand held IR gauge verifying all operating temperatures within normal parameters; the temperature gauge sender was replaced and the symptoms continued; the instrument cluster had a ground wire connecting both gauge screw posts on the back side, and the addition of a ground wire from the posts to the body made no difference. So, the only thing left was to chase the problem back to the gauge. Removing and opening the instrument cluster revealed the gauge ground connector hanging on to the edge of circuit board tab solely by the wire tension. It was never fully pushed onto the tab. Making matters worse, the screw post was loose and had pulled out of the back side of the gauge case when I previously checked and tightened the knurled secruring nut. All is is now fixed and working as it should.
  17. Yes they can... given their fuel tanks are slightly bigger than spec.
  18. BMW '02s can't keep up with Alfa GTVs...
  19. There are caps included for both end. Some gas will remain in the corrugations of the hose after use, so the caps will keep fumes contained during storage. I have a few left, so PM me for pricing if interested.
  20. Those extra US DOT mandated side and rear reflectors really enhance car visibility and should never be removed. Doing so would lessen the car’s originality or increase the odds of being hit under dark driving conditions .
  21. Dick Gale's annual "One Lap Marin" for driving the back roads of western Marin and coastal Highway 1 is on the Alfa Romeo Association events calendar for 6/15/19. The ARA will stage up in their usual location at Greenbrae, at the west end of the Bon Air Shopping Center parking lot by Starbucks from 8-9:30am. The route usually takes them into Tomales around 11am to regroup, returning to Sausalito by afternoon for a gathering at Dick's house boat. In past years, general staging occurred on the east side of the 101 Marin City exit in the parking lots off Gate 6 Road. Not sure about this year... YMMV
  22. Filling up on Oregon is a non-issue (no Vapor Recovery nozzles and gas station attendants usually fill up your car for you). California on the other hand has various VR nozzle types, and most require pushing/retraction of the vapor or bellows seal. Filling the '02 is no fun due to the filler location (low and on the vertical side of the fender) and neck orientation (which doesn't allow full insertion of the fueling nozzle). There are various solutions ranging from no costs (fill it slow and position the nozzle at some odd angle) to >$500 (for the custom in-trunk design by Kooglewerks). After a year of '02 ownership, I got tired of spilling fuel on the car and ground as well as smelling fumes while crouched by the filler. I've tried a few different filler adaptor designs and this filler works best, as odd as it may appear. Plus for someone with a bad back, it's a major improvement being able to stand straight while filling the car.
  23. Hitting the road from Benicia at 7am to help BA02 set up. If anyone is planning to cross either bridge on 80 or 680 into CCC at that hour, you could have company.
