  1. Thanks! I've been working feverishly to complete a 5 speed and 3.91 LSD swap these last few weeks in preparation for Mid Am. Reworked the distributer and it runs sooooo well now. Replaced a brake booster on Saturday (glad it decided to fail with enough time for me to source a replacement on Parts Geek .com) and got new 195/50 Yoko S-Drives all around. It drives sooooo smoothly now and sticks like glue. Shoulda bought tires long time ago. Here's a picture of the best part... Solex DDHs with original velocity stacks. I run Uni Filters with their 15 degree angled mounts, no interference with the standard booster or battery. (some day I'll have a Tii booster)
  2. Here's my rendition See y'all at Mid America!
  3. Do you still have this booster?? Mine just failed. Ed Z
  4. Laurent, I just went through this exercise not 6 months ago...using Solex DDH carbs. I couldn't afford a good original airbox, so I used UNI Filters with angled necks. They easily clear my standard brake booster. Yes, I had to re-jet my carbs, but didn't have to change the chokes. (my carbs are quite different than the PHHs) Re-jetting isn't so bad and Ruddies-Berlin should have all the carb jets and rebuild kits for you. www.ruddies-berlin.de Here are the filters I used... I am very happy with them. They fit nicely over the original velocity stacks. The red pre filter slips over the black, base filter...so you can choose what color you like best. The red, pre-filter is only for very dusty conditions. The clamp-on, pod filters from UNI are Model UP-6245 AST http://www.unifilter.com/clamp-on/ Also...here's a link with some very good info on tuning the PHH. The photos can be a bit of a pain to download, but makes a good reference. http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/tech-conversions/19030-how-tune-your-solex-carburetor-images-procedures.html Good luck finding an original airbox. It can fit on a standard brake booster, but you will need to re-form the bottom of the main air chamber (with a hammer) to clear the taller booster. I may know of someone who has a couple of airboxes... send me an email and I'll send you his info. I have seen a few on eBay, as well. I'm quite happy with how my vintage carbs turned out, so don't give up too soon. Make sure the throttle shafts are not worn, as you will have a vacuum leak and that will cause poor idling among other nasty issues. The housings can be re-bushed to solve the problem. Lars is a wealth of good information. I'd pay attention to what he says Good luck! Ed Z
  5. Ha! That's Mister Poophead to you, pal...
  6. Installing the 5 speed that's been sitting on the garage floor was put on the front burner three weeks ago when the vibration I was feeling was pinned down the input shaft bearing of the old 4 speed... Had just bought a 3.91 LSD, so that was swapped in last week while we waited on the last of the transmission parts. It should be all ready to put two black patches of rubber on the parking lot tomorrow night!
  7. I just got off the phone with the Best Western in Eureka Springs and took the last discounted room available for Mid America. I was told there was only one more room left and it isn't discounted for the event... Phone # is 800-221-3344 annnnnnddddd.... GO!
  8. Does anyone know, or have seen this Squaretail in Georgetown? http://austin.craigslist.org/cto/4381956805.html I thought I'd go give it a looksee, since it's just up the road and seems to be a nicely sorted out car. Ed Z
  9. I went through this a few months back while installing dual carbs. The 320i water neck I had didn't have any sensors in it and I needed to plug two ports. I couldn't find a properly sized bolt so I took the neck gown to my local Goodyear auto shop, where I know the manager. He dumped a 5 gallon bucket of nuts, bolts and assorted fasteners on the floor and we sifted through them till we found what would fit. He even gave me o-rings to help seal them up. Turns out the thread size is the same as some lug bolts, as that's what I ended up with. Here's some pics of the water neck, before and after.
  10. uggghhhh... I sooooo wanted to attend this. As it turns out, my 4 speed died a couple weeks ago and the car is gutted on the shop floor awaiting all sorts of parts. Next year, next year!!! Great video, though...looks like a helluva time.
  11. "Banana Clearance" is exactly the problem I have with mine... I also notice how my turn signals don't fit very well on that side! $160 would be a cheap enough fix when it comes time to repaint. Thanks everyone for the good info.
  12. I have the EXACT same issue! Pretty sure my passenger side door is a replacement and it has a significant gap with the front fender (while the driver's side looks great) The curves of the rear of the fender and the front of the door are different. It fits well at top and bottom, but the gap is wide in the middle..? Beats the heck out of me... sure hope someone posts a solution!
  13. no worries... it was my thread to hack I'm pretty sure I have my answers anyways. "you take it off any sweet jumps?" - Napoleon Dynamite 'you got, like, 3 feet of air that time..."
  14. in Forestry Dept yellow... mint-green/grun wheel....LUCKY You take it off any sweet jumps?
  15. oh yes.... rally truck! Where did you get the adapter plates to fit the Recaros...or are those Scheel seats?
  16. here's the picture of that tall shifter
  17. I am not definitely not looking for a very short shifter. I want to keep a stock look as much as I can. I have seen posts where folks have lengthened the lever http://www.bmw2002faq.com/uploads/monthly_03_2013/post-147-13667670482755_thumb.jpg But I'm not interested in that for this car. Looks like the shift lever I'm getting will be a push-on style. Any tips if I can thread it and use an original shift knob?
  18. Looking for a set of early-style set of dash knobs in good condition. I have the cigarette lighter, but need the headlight, fan, windshield wiper and choke. The knobs will look like this... PM or email me. Many thanks, Ed Z Location: Cedar Park, Texas
  19. perfect... I guess this whole time I've been thinking the short shift kits involved more than just a shorter shift lever. I was thinking it was some complex series of levers to actuate the transmission's shift rod. That doesn't appear to be the case... Maybe I should just scrap all this and go with the old skool, Rat Fink, 5' long, hot rod shifter with 8-Ball knob...then swap the Panasports for some Moonies.
  20. Yes, leverage is a wonderful thing. This is the Getrag 240 with the aluminum shift forks. A shorter shifter would require more force on the top side, but exert less force on the forks...right? Meaning one might be less apt to damage a shift fork. With a longer shifter, one could more easily exert too much force on a sticky shift... I think that we are talking about amounts of force, though. I'm really asking folks what they have used and what they like. Obviously, my mileage will vary... The original shifter in the 4 speed, though good for it's design, was sloppy enough to remind me not to be heavy-handed with those old synchros. Most shifting was done with a light touch. Would I be able to have that same finesse with the short shifter?
  21. No A/C, Jim. I'll ask about the shift rod, though. I'm looking to keep the outward appearance looking original. I may have to thread the push-on style shift rod in order to use my old wooden shift knob. Unless someone has an original Alpina knob ??
  22. So, we started the 5 speed swap and tore into the '71 last night. The tranny I was able to find is the not-as-popular Getrag 240. It gets a lot of bad press, but I read where Toby has had good luck with it. I'm going with the Aardvarc kit and Dave is asking which type shifter I'd like. The original shifter was recently rebuilt and felt very good and I was happy with it. If I remember, Dave is offering a standard throw, short throw, and super short throw. This car has plenty of performance upgrades (3.91 LSD is happening at the same time) and would like to start attending some Driver's Events and autocross. I think the middle-of-the-road, short throw will do nicely because I drive it on the street too much and think the super short throw will be a PITA. I know there are plenty of opinions here, so let me pros and cons... Much obliged... Ed
  23. Oh, forgot to add a Thank You to Ken for the un-dented oil cap. It looks great all polished and installed!
