  1. Here's the route...... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=CA-1&daddr=34.138378,-118.639297+to:Mulholland+Hwy+to:Mulholland+Raceway%2FSchueren+Rd+to:Mulholland+Raceway%2FPiuma+Rd+to:Piuma+Rd+to:Mulholland+Hwy+to:Mulholland+Hwy+to:CA-23%2FWestlake+Blvd+to:CA-1&hl=en&geocode=FSpjBwIdyP_u-A%3B%3BFZzMCAIddo_t-A%3BFYoJCAIdlJzt-A%3BFbHWBwIdhTjt-A%3BFVINCAIdZLbs-A%3BFQR0CAIdesnr-A%3BFcxWCAIdsFzr-A%3BFaZoCAIddF3q-A%3BFblTBwIdSOrs-A&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=13&via=1,2,4,5,6,7&sll=34.127721,-118.644104&sspn=0.083412,0.146427&gl=us&ie=UTF8&z=13 Went the front side of the route today, Old Topanga to Stunt Rd and down Piuma.......this will be fun..... Jeff
  2. I'm going to guess that number 1) refers to the charcoal (?) air canister that is part of the smog/emissions system. Having the good fortune of owning a 1975 (meaning last smog exempt year) 2002 in California that part went the way of the winds many miles ago. Number 2) the tuna can is indeed a tii only item, it refers to the top of the throttle body of the FI system, and inside is the idle adjustment......at least I think those are the answers! Jeff
  3. The first SoCal Vintage BMW event for 2009 is scheduled for Sunday, February 15 at 7AM. It will be fun drive through the Malibu canyons on Mulholland Highway and Pacific Coast Highway. The drive will end at the Colony Shopping Center where we can park our cars together for a 'mini-meet' and we'll have breakfast there courtesy of Coogies. There will be a registration link on the socalvintagebmw.com website in on the Drive Events page. Look forward to seeing you! There will also be a trackevent on Friday 2/13 (!) that some of the SoCal 02 guys will be going to at Willow Springs. Check out http://www.redlinetrackevents.com/ for more info. 5. I guess I'll have to find a helmet and gloves, because SoCal Vintage BMW is suppossed to organize a drive to the VARA event at Buttonwillow in Feb. I'll feel a little more plebian running around a race track with my stock M10, even with the 38/38....I feel more an outlaw when I zoom through curves over the speed limit!! Ironically, on the SoCal Vintage drives, I'm always the one bringing up the rear, showing up 5 minutes later, because of the stock configuration and I like to take in the views. The photo website is rockstorephotos.com Jeff
  6. Shelby, Yes it is Mulholland, out in Malibu, just west of the Rock Store near Kanan Dume Rd. which is a well know biker hang. Along this end of Mulholland, the 101 travels parallel to Mullholland, about 7-8 miles to the north over the mountains. the west terminus of Mulholland spills out onto Pacific Coast Highway at Leo Carillo Beach, about 30 miles from Santa Monica. However, Mullholland does meet the 101 at its eastern terminus in the Cahuenga Pass in Hollywood, but that is a very different road, about 40 miles east (maybe more) of where the photo is. Mullholland is nice in the Hollywood Hills, great views, has Dead Man's Curve and all that but very residential and a tough stretch to get any speed up.... Jeff
  7. Good point Bob, maybe I should have stated 'going at a high speed through a hairpin turn'. Either way, you can see I keep my turns a bit tight and like to use ALL of the road....!!! Jeff
  8. Saturday morning was one of those clear beautiful days that show up from time to time in SoCal, so I decided to skip my Saturday morning errands and take the Red Menace out through the Malibu mountains via Topanga Canyon, over to Stunt Rd and across Mulholland over to Decker Canyon/CA 23 and back to PCH. It was early enough that there wasn't much traffic and the sport bikes were at a minimum, so I tried to get everything out of the 2 litre. At the base of the Snake, which is a winding section just west of the Rock Store, a photog was shooting photos of everyone going by (he's there every weekend) and when I saw mine on his site, I had to buy it. I think we might do a SoCal Vintage drive through here and have him shoot everyone.....enjoy~~~~ Jeff PS - yes, I know I'm leaning the wrong way through a high speed hairpin turn, but I'm trying to do my best Hans Stuck imitiation......
  9. Norm, I saw that listing on Bring a Trailer and the only reason I didn't get on it is that I'm too lazy to fetch a car 300 miles away. I'm really glad 'one of us' nabbed it. I guess it was in the stars that you were to get a red Glas GT.....your CS was trying to give you the hint at the SoCal Vintage Meet, given that it parked right next to John Barlow's.......now if we can just get the two GTs to mate and have extra NOS parts....... Jeff
  10. Sounds electrical, make sure you are getting 12 volts at the coil....if not there is a resistor issue and you are not getting enough juice, hence the 'cut-out' at certain rpms. As said above, could be a ballast problem. What kind of coil do you have? Jeff
  11. Michael, Congrats on the sale, just goes to show the cream of the cars are always recession-proof. I know how you feel, that's why I sold my tii as soon as I could after restoring it, I didn't want to get attached. There will be other projects for all of us....hope you and Laura are great and business is holding its own. See you guys soon..... Jeff
  12. I'm supposed to be going to the Channel Islands and Santa Ynez over that Friday/Saturday, but if the rains come.....well, lets see.... Jeff
  13. 02ers.... I was at Jeff Ireland's shop on Friday morning and he asked me to try to get the word out regarding 292 cams. He is in the process of setting up manufacture of 292 cams to exact specs of a Schrick 292, and is looking for anyone who might have a used Schrick 292 hanging around that may have a bad lobe, or is otherwise intact, but not useful. He needs one so he can get the exact measurements, and is planning on having IE 292 cams manufactured to exact Schrick specs. IE has done great regrinds for quite some time, but we all know that newly manufactured is preferable to a regrind for many reasons - exact specs and measurement, etc. Jeff is providing a generous offer, if you are willing to send in your Schrick 292 cam in so he can use it to set up exact manufacture specs, he will send you a brand new IE 292 cam in return, probably in about 60 days. First usable cam in wins! Anyone who is running IE parts on their car (a lot of us!) know that quality and reliablity of IE's work. This will be a nice service to the Vintage BMW community, since last time I checked a new Schrick 292 cost over $500, and Jeff will deliver an equal cam for a whole lot less. Feel free to drop a note to me or him, and let me know anyway I can help. Thanks guys for your time and help. We're also tentatively planning a Xmas weekend drive that will end up at an open house at Ireland Engineering and Groma Fabricators, which are next door to each other. Jeff will offer some "drive only' specials for the guys doing the drive and we'll have lunch there, a bbq if enough guys commit. More on this soon. Thanks Jeff
  14. I'm getting a little tired of the quirkiness of the 38/38 in my '75, plus I think there might be a short in the ignition electricals.....I'm seriously considering a conversion to Megasquirt but have no time or space to build one up (looks like it would be a fun project....I do need a garage!) I know this is a longshot, but is anyone out there considering selling a full MS system they may have? Thanks. Jeff
  15. Ok, it's a little early, and I'd say mark your calendars but you probably don't even have a 2009 one yet ( I don't!), but the Socal Vintage BMW Meet is set for Sat., Oct 24, 2009. It will be a 25 year show now, so all BMWs 1984 and back are good to go in - I want to see how many M1's we can shake loose, and park them next to the Isettas....HA!......We'll post info on the next drive real soon. Jeff
  16. Michael, Good luck with the sale, it is a good and fair price to be had for a historic tii, and one that has been very well cared for......I just hope it stays in the Cal community so we all can keep seeing it at meets year after year.....talk to you soon. Jeff
  17. Very good Michael...keep the boys in the shop busy! I'm sure you'll take an already nice tii and make it superb..... Jeff
  18. Great photos Bill, may we use some on our website? We'll credit you of course.... Jeff
  19. Jay, If you give us the link/address to your site I'll set it up on the website so that it directly goes over to yours. Yo can email it if needed. Thanks again, really great photo work. Jeff
  20. Thank you guys, all the hard work was worth it seeing the great turnout ( I think we had over a 100 cars...I couldn't get out to count them). and especially hearing from all of you yesterday just how much fun you all were having. That makes it all worth it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get out enough to take a lot of photos, so yo guys are welcome to email any and all photos you have and I'll get them up on the socalvintagebmw website. Here's one you didn't see - us setting up at 7AM! Plus I love this other one - Tourings leading into Turbos and then Cabs......When I get my brain back I'll start planning the next drive/rally/whatever! Thanks! Jeff
  21. Yes, thank yo all, I'm passing on the full resto candidate.....and I'm more inclined to put a old 700 together with a rocket engine out back! Ok, maybe a K75 engine will do it. Seriously, thanks for the input... Jeff
  22. Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh Boy!!!! The SoCal Vintage Meet is TOMORROW!! I can't believe its finally here! We're going to have well over 100 cars there, and online registration closes today at 6PM! We'll accomodate as many drive ups day of show as we can, and that will be $20 cash at the door. The advantage of pre-registering is we'll have all your stuff ready to hand to you when you pull up and check in.....but everyone show up! I'm enjoying it now, because this time tomorrow we'll be grinding away getting everything set up, Sponsors situated, food guy set up, signage up and all that pre-show stuff! This is going to be so cool, I feel like a kid who found out Xmas eve he's getting that bike he's been dreaming of!! Make sure you get bring your own coffee!! WooooooHoooooo! Pardon my shameless exuberance... Jeff
  23. All valid points Paul, the damn problem with these cars is they pull at you emotionally, and boy is that a bad way to buy a car.....I love my 02 becasue it satisfies so much logically.....but, I'll still check this E9 out to the point where either the mind or the heart will win out... Jeff
  24. Are there any FAQers that are in the Albany/Capitol District area that would be willing to look at a (gasp!) E9 coupe for me, or know a good vintage BMW tech/mechanic in the area? Of course I will compensate for time and mileage. I ran across the car while driving through on vacation a couple of weeks back and did not have the time to give it a thorough going over....it has sat a while, but it did drive decently, the suspension and handling were good, the pickup was spotty, but probably to be expected for a CSi that hasn't been driven in a year(?) (could be injector problems?) . Best of all, I was able to get my key through the fender metal by the drivers strut tower without too much effort, so the rust monster is there....maybe bringing this car to the Pacific Coast is not such a good idea......anyone up in that neck of the foliage changing woods? Thanks Jeff
  25. John and I had a chat about it and we're going to try to accomodate everyone who shows up even if they haven't registered - just have your $20 cash in hand! We want this to be a fun event for everyone and really want to welcome the SoCal Vintage Community, and not have too many entry restrictions...we laid out the parking template and I talked to Parks and Recreation, and we'll get everyone in......pre-registering just makes our lives easier as we know what to expect.....been a lot of registrations this week....should be over 100 cars there....maybe more. Jeff
