  1. So, with more poking around, I run across this metal tab at the top left part of the blower motor- can't really see well in there, so I assume a flag contact - and by moving it slightly away from the motor body, all seems fine now, a heater fan that actually works on demand with all three speeds, one of the more rare sounds in an '02......a little bit of smell from the 3 in 1 oil....or is that the smell of wires burning? I'll look for smoke, just the tiniest wisp of it came up from the motor while I was figiting about.....ah, old machines..... Jeff
  2. $24K is pretty serious coin for a tii, and I'm really curious as to what the story behind this is, if we'll ever know. I'm an interested party since I'll probably be selling my sunroof (with factory pop up deflectors!) Polaris '72 in the next month or two, and it has been gone through thoroughly cosmetically, paint, body - and the mechanicals have all been taken care of and sorted out to the proper levels by Jack Fahuna. It's not a concours car, but it's the next level below, in my opinion, a fab driver or club/event car. I'm just waiting to get the 14" bottlecaps off and the Campagnolo alloys on.....I may wait and take it up to Palo Alto in May, if it hasn't sold by then. Great car, just do not have the room for it, and this car is so nice that I can't in good conscience park it on the street. Sorry for the thread highjack, but now I know where I should be pricing mine, which is good, since I have $20K in resto receipts already! HA! Jeff
  3. A little more information after futzing around with the fan this afternoon, between the raindrops. Most of the time I try to turn the the fan on, slide the fan control all the way to the right and, voila.....nothing. After trying to coax the fan along with a short piece of hanger, I get the brain storm to poke the contact at the top of the fan motor with the piece of metal hanger I'm using - don't know if I crossed the circuit by touching the top motor flag connector with the cowl metal, or just poking the contact point with the hanger did it, but after that the motor fired up and ran for some time. Funny, after shutting it off and putting the control slide to off, it wouldn't work again. Bad control plate? Maybe the contacts where the fans speeds are controlled need cleaning? Anyone else run across this? Thanks all, again...... Jeff
  4. Ok, sorry for the provacative lead in, but I've gotten my Verona-ish '75 back from Jack Fahuna and it runs great and is dialed in handling, looks, sound and interior-wise - I'm having that shit eating grin on my face at 5K RPMs that we all (should) know. Now, I have a funny little heater fan issue, that I've not read about. When the car is cold, say sitting overnight, I turn the car on (not start) and turn the fan on and I can hear it clipping away, knocking slightly against something but it's going. Then after about 5 minutes, it just dies, spins to a stop, seems like the juice just cuts out. And I can't get it to go again any other time other than when it's been sitting awhile. I would love a simple fix on this as we all know pulling out the box isn't exactly a good time. Anyone ever run across this? Any ideas? Thanks. Jeff
  5. Thanks for all the help, pulling the wires on the cold start valve made a huge difference. It'll be in jack's shop Saturday, so he can pour his tii expertise into it...... Jeff
  6. Since we're discussing tii idling, I got my tii a couple of weeks back and have been running it to identify any last items that need to be addressed, since the car was in long term storage. The engine ran fine up until yesterday, where I had a lot of trouble getting it turned over, and then once it did kick, it idles very roughly, have to keep my foot on the pedal to keep from stalling and a lot of smelly visible exhaust comes out, and some black carbon sputum a few feet back of the pipe on the driveway. Seems like a spark/fuel delivery/coil issue and there were black spots on the new distributor cap contacts. Thoughts? thanks. Jeff
  7. Might be a patrol prototype that is being tested around the state capitol. I've heard there is a law on the books in California that all patrol cars (not unmarked/undercover), including local municipalities, must be painted in some form of black and white treatment. However I've seen a number of county sheriff's cars (luckily not in my rear mirror) that don't seem to fit that description. A lot of the cars in CA are Black and Whtie though.....I'm sure there's some reason for it... Jeff
  8. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told, by someone who weighed them both, that the M20 is only 15 pounds heavier than a standard tii engine. That shouldn't effect handling too much, although the transmission is another story, and the length of the engine/weight distribution, etc. Being a straight six, that M20 needs a lot of cutting and pasting in the 02 engine bay to get in, at least from what I was seeing this weekend, with one being dropped in an 02 shell. I'm actually chomping at the bit on the next project, dropping an M20, S14, M42 into a shell.....I guess I better get the Polaris tii finished and on the road first....and after this resto, I may wait and find a car where all the heavy lifting is already done.... Jeff
  9. I guess this doofus feels crumple zones, sealt belts, disc/ABS brakes and other technological innovations are also leading causes of accidents, versus the 'good ol' days'. I love how this journalist doesn't use any facts to support his thesis, strictly his smelly opinion that's farted out to befoul the air. I guess he feels parallel parking a 1956 Cadillac into a tight space with worm and roller steering is a plus as well. Yikes. Jeff
  10. Cyntaxx, Welcome to the board and give yourself some props for asking around here first before pulling the trigger....you have already saved yourself a lot of time, money and headaches. There is a lot of noticeable rust on this car, which usually means there's going to be a lot more that you can't see. The A pillar is bad, I would expect that in a sunroof car, since the drains can clog there, but that is a large scarlet banner on a non sunroof car. That can mean fender replacement and probably fabrication of a new fender bracket under the lower corner of the windsheild and the rout on the wallet is on. I'm willing to bet the driver's frame rail is swiss cheese and we haven't touched the rockers yet. Rough guess, $10K minimum just on rust repair and (re) paint. And then there's the interior.....I just spent $1400 on restuffing seats and getting correct early vinyl (NLA via BMW) Now, if you have time and space and the know how.....have at it. Not to scare you away, but if you're paying more than a $1000 for this car, I personally would pass. Strictly my opinoin of course... Jeff
  11. Jay, Sorry, had I known to look for you we would have....as it was me going there was a last minute thing....and just for the record, I think the Traction Avant is one of the prettiest cars out of Europe and Citroen has a well earned engineering reputation. You either love the way a DS looks, or not..... Jeff
  12. I forgot to add earlier.......How many of you noticed the wipers on the rear window of the Lancia Flaminia Berlina? Now, raise your hands if you knew that in addition to those, there is also a set of wipers on the INSIDE of the rear window......ah, I thought so - I didn't know either and wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it myself. Now that's a rear defogger, Italian-style! Lots of choices for the meter maid to stick that parking ticket on.... Jeff
  13. Jay, Thanks for the great shots, it really captures the spirit of the show. There was a lot of fantastic iron there, especially Alfa's, and heading over there with John Barlow behind his excellent Glas 1600GT (doesn't it look great without the front bumper?) and spending the the day there with him was really fun. Jack Fahuna showed up later and that always is fun, for me at least. I fell in love with the HF Fulvia's and then was informed of the reality of owning a Lancia in the States....you think getting parts for 02 is a challenge? Anyway, a lot of the cool car people were there, and I heard a lot of the uncool ones were there as well, I wouldn't know, since I don't spend time with them. Those mid engine Matras were funky. And there is a very clean restored 1966 Fiat 1500 convertible that is for sale that was at the show.....a good thing it's not on my short list because its a very very nice car, and a really good restoration. Jeff
  14. I'll bet the owner gets some cheap yucks when he/she takes it to the hand wash. Jeff

  16. jay, The photos are quite crisp and clear from here, very nice light and composition. The show was a real treat, and there was a lot (A LOT!) of fun iron there, a lot of very cool Alfas, etc. We still haven't figured out how Danny or his dad got that Renault Sport into the country, notice the car is not registered - funny how there was another (yellow) one for sale somewhere else in the country, probably the only 2 in the USA. No photos of John Barlow's beautiful red Glas 1600 GT? It was the only BMW (Italian bodymaker) there, that I saw.....and there were some fun cars for sale in the lot....The Talbot and the fab '55 Zagato 8V next to it were amazing....After this show I'm suddenly very fond of Lancia Fulvias.... Jeff
  17. Targa, they drove their asses off and came ahead of some pretty competitive iron. With that logic, my car should get a vote or two since I point that kidney grill onto the 405 every day, which is more like an automotive roller derby. Jeff
  18. Z, Yes, that would make sense....I just can't bring myself to pull a solid, strong, numbers matching engine out......so, methinks I have to bone up on all the aftermarket FI systems for 2002's - any others beside Megasquirt? I can turn a wrench, but the thought of Jeff getting involved on a DIY basis with fuel delivery, spark timing and such is making my neighbors very nervous...... Jeff
  19. Yes, I'm a noob to the 02 fuel injection world....Is there a complete MS kit that you can just install everything? After chasing down arcane tii parts for the tii resto, I'd love to find a 'one-stop' solution for FI, I just don't have the time to go to junkyards and chase down trigger wheels and all the various parts....Ireland is building one, but it's not out yet...thanks. Jeff
  20. Tii gurus..... I have a quick question - has anyone converted over a full tii induction system to a stock engine? I know there are the fuel delivery mods that should be done, sender, fuel lines, fuel pump, etc, but are there any other 'deal-breaker'(too much work/doesn't make sense) changes that need to be made? I believe there is a piston compression difference (9.3 vs. 8.5?) - and could the Kfish pump be run off a A/C pulley? There is of course the mounting issues, but assuming all the brackets are there......is this pretty much a 'plug and play' deal? I'm guessing not, otherwise we'd see more of this? I'm thinking of doing this on my '75, with an E12 head.....I await the tidal wave of knowledge that is about to wash over me! Jeff
  21. John, Very nice work, I know how much of this you put in yourself....wasn't this a Malaga car last time I saw it? It was sweet then. Great paint, did the guys down in Southgate do it? Jeez, I've learned so much with tht tii resto this go round, I'll be so much smarter on the next project.......(he says now). Jeff
  22. W, So is it possible that the coil is not a problem at all, that if I were just to turn the distributor that 1/8 of an inch (clockwise?) that would take care of the burned spots? And the idle would be smoother? Jeff
  23. '02 experts..... I've been having an odd occurence inside my distributor cap on my '75, seems at the contacts, the rear half of the contacts (goes clockwise, yes?) for about a 1/8-1/4 inch have been blackened and the right tip of the rotor seems a bit more worn that the rest....I've been told this is a hot coil, or any other thoughts on it? Is the fix simply swapping out the Bosch Blue coil in there? Any suggestions on a replacement coil? I do have a Crane Fireball XR700 electronic ignition if that matters...Also, on a related note(?) my car has started to 'buck' a bit at low speeds, say 10-15 miles per hour, and steady speed, almost like it's getting an irregular flow or there is a clutch issue.....? A lot like when I was learning to drive a clutch (on a Corvette no less, nice learning curve) and I would let the clutch out to quickly without giving it enough gas. Just seems weird that it's happening at 15 miles an hour, while eveything is at low rpms.....it also happens in reverse, but I've not done a lot of miles backwards lately. Any thoughts and help are muy appeciato......thanks. Jeff
  24. I say extend the power pole higher so you can take it out on the electric bus line routes in San Francisco, or any other city that still has electric overhead street wires. Now, that would be a thrill ride. There is the issue of no brakes, but then again, that's why they have those nifty wrap around bumpers. Of course, a bus' bumper comes in slighter higher....... Jeff
  25. Good point, if it is rust free (and those are still very hard to find even in Cali - I mean rust FREE) it doesn't matter where it comes from...plenty of dry enough spots all through the West, and thre are garages world-wide. Wish I had one, instead of a stupid car port! Jeff
