  1. Try your local air cooled VW bug shop, they usually have a lot of Bosch parts and because they are sold for VW's, prices can be cheaper there than going to a BMW shop. I've gone to the one near me and they had the tune parts I needed for my 02. If you don't have a receipt showing when the spark plug wires were changed last, do it. One shop I highly recommend is Mesa Performance in Costa Mesa CA. G-Man http://www.mesaperformance.com/web_store/web_store.cgi?page=bmwcat/tuneup.html&category=yes&cart_id=3355068.4938
  2. Mesa Performance has rebuilt tii fuel pumps for $121.00 exchange. I've been running one of theirs for several years on my tii, no problem at all. You can't beat the price G-Man http://www.mesaperformance.com/web_store/web_store.cgi?page=bmwcat/fuelpump.html&category=yes&cart_id=2833854.32366
  3. Tom Jones in Sacramento probably owns more early 1600's than anyone else. Sorry Tom, I took this off one of your posts from the first fives list G-Man Tom Jones Technician @ Autostatt European Sacramento, CA '66 1600-2, bent, sittin & waiting for $ '67 1600-2, beater sleeper '67 1600-2, parts car '67 1600-2, project, sittin & waiting for $$ '67 1800A, project just sittin & waiting '80 528i 5spd, shared ownership w/ my cousin, project car, 3.5L L-jet '86 528e 5spd, My daily driver, 300+k miles '86 325A, Wife's car 250+k miles
  4. Nothing beats the sound of a M30 accelerating hard with dual Webers. With it's intake noise and big six wail, it brings magic to the ears. But it makes my wallet much lighter knowing how much gas a non EFI M30 guzzles down. But I like the SPG factor better (smiles per gallon). G-Man
  5. Vroomer, I'm so sorry that I have been a real bad influence on you, we just twisted your arm so hard to join the 02 community. I must not have been that bad of an influence on you, because I only helped corrupt you part way. You had to have an 02 after we all brought our 02's to Bimmerfest in Santa Barbara last year. But when I showed up to Palo Alto in my 70 E3 2800, you didn't go postal and go out and buy an E3. I've got to try harder next time to corrupt you over to the dark side. You know you are really an old BMW pyscho when you have an 02 AND something in your stable like a NK, E3, or if you have real deep pockets, an E9. Once you start driving an E3/E9 with a M30 six engine, you'll be hooked. Congrats on your find. I'm guessing we will soon see your Z4 on craigslist to help finance your touring restoration. This below email is from the E3 email list in regards to a new list member wondering if he should restore his E3 2500. You could easily subsitute 2002 in place of E3 and we would all agree that we all suffer from the same incurable disease, 02itis... Group, I am right on this one??? Read on. G-Man 74 tii 73 Bavaria 70 E3 2800 This list will coerce you at gun-point to forsake all of your friends and family in the interest of restoring, to an obsessive, compulsive degree, your 2500. This list will also compel you to devote 95% of your disposable income to parts purchases, the other 5% being devoted to the purchase of band-aids and "adult" beverages. This list will threaten you with bodily harm unless you purchase at least one Getrag 265 5-speed overdrive transmission, a set of rear headrests that don't match your interior, a set of used BBS wheels, a Suspension Techniques spring and anti-sway bar kit, a set of wider and lower profile tires, a Crane ignition unit, and an aftermarket sport steering wheel (probably Momo) even though you don't have an adapter yet. The threat of bodily harm will be for real, and must be taken seriously. You will waste time at work calling three time zones away in search of a side-loading limited slip differential. In October or August you will drive a minimum of 300 miles to drink beer with, and look at the cars of, people whom you have never before met. You will do it again the following year. You will subscribe to the CS Registry and First Fives mailing lists for no apparent reason. You will come to like and admire Bill Bowes for no apparent reason. Within three months of starting the restoration, you will purchase a 1972 Bavaria as a parts/donor car. It will be Sahara with a tobacco interior. Within twelve months you will purchase a second parts car because you will have decided to restore the first parts car, rather than parting it out. The second parts car will be a '73 Bavaria. It will be either faded Fjord blue or faded Polaris silver, and it will have a very nice blue vinyl interior. The radio antennas on all three cars will be located in different places. You will lose sleep over this. You will curse the previous owner ("PO") who failed to return tools to the toolkit in the trunk, unless you are a patent examiner, in which case you will wonder what all the fuss is about. Within 6 minutes of getting your 2500 running, you will decide to transplant a later 3.3 or 3.5 liter engine from an '85-'89 E28 five series. You will labor over the decision to transplant a fuel injection system onto the car, but you will eventually succumb, and you will rejoice in your decision. Thereafter, you will seek out E36 M3s driven by mere children, for the pure pleasure of racing them to the next corner. Typically you will win, albeit through sheer recklessness. As you drive away from them, you will realize that they will never amount to anything. They will come to fear you and all that you represent. Paul at Maximillian Importing will put you as number 7 on his speed-dial. Jim at Mesa will know your children's birthdays. You will learn to speak pidgeon-German. You will develop a taste for an obscure, caustic ginger ale which can be used in place of hydrogen peroxide. On a business trip you will be seated on an airplane next to a man named Walter Eschelbach. You will bitch-slap him with no explanation, and then order an Orangina from the flight attendant. Anyone on this list will tell you the same. Am I right, folks? Ciao, DHW Wilkommen Sie to the Madness. ("Mad Gau Disease" as it is know by the afflicted)
  6. As of now, I have three old BMW's I sold my other 73 Bavaria last year, it had a 79 E24 3.3L and had been converted to EFI, Did that Bav ever run, I miss that one. 74 tii, 5 speed, lsd, sahara 73 Bavaria, 5 speed, weber's, alpina's, malaga 70 E3 2800, 4 speed, Euro spec, totally stock (except for Nardi wheel), 95K original KM's on car, granada What other older BMW's do 02 owners own? G-Man
  7. This is probably one of earliest US spec 2002 (1660013) that hasn't gone to the crusher. Anyone know of an earlier US spec 2002? The ad says the owner believes that this 02 is the second oldest US spec 2002 still around. It would have to have a VIN between 1660001-1660012 to be older, there could only be twelve 02's older than this one. It's in need of a total restoration. I like the fact that the owner recognizes the historical impact of this 02 and refuses to part it out. Good for him! Somebody save this 02! G-Man http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/t,270326/
  8. I vote for Granada, I repainted my 70 E3 2800 back to the original color, granada last year. It had been repainted before in a Earl Scheib verona color. After the complete body strip, and repaint, it looks quite stunning I must say. I am an originalist as far as paint goes. if you want a car in another color, go buy one in that color. I even repainted my sahara tii back to sahara, next time you go to a 02 fest, look at the engine bays of a few 02's, sahara is the most common color of an 02 to be repainted (my opinion), Now I've got to save a few pennies to strip and repaint my 73 Bavaria back to the original color, it was originally Verona, PO repainted it malaga. G-Man
  9. Here are some 13" 5 spoke Chromadora's, they ain't cheap. At that price, your bottlecaps are looking pretty good. Usual disclaimers apply G-Man http://www.probimmer.com/PartsWheels.php
  10. I forward your request to the E3 Senior Six email list. If you own an E3, I highly suggest you join the Senior Six group and their email list. http://www.seniorsix.org/ Hopefully you should be hearing from one of them soon who has a spare console in their parts bin. If not, suggest you try Peter Sliskovich in LA http://www.coupeking.com/ on Carl Nelson in San Diego http://www.bimmerdoc.com/ Both Carl and Peter have parted several E3's and should have a center console in their parts bin G-Man 74 tii, 5 speed, lsd, sahara 73 E3 Bavaria, 5 speed, Weber's, Alpina's, malaga 70 E3 2800, 4 speed, Euro spec, totally stock, 95K original KM's, granada
  11. The owner sounded like money was no object to building this car. That was a lot of money that was spent on dialing this car in. The only thing it seems to be missing is a close ratio 5 speed but good luck finding one of those anyway. I'm impressed to say the least. I'm glad my ex didn't question me on how much I spent on my parts or upgrades for my old BMW's. G-Man http://seattle.craigslist.org/car/135461027.html
  12. That's a Nardi, I have one in my 70 E3 2800. http://www.nardiwheels.com/classico.html
  13. Go to the 2002faq for sale page, lot's of CA 02's there. Also go to the links page on 2002faq and click on the 2002's for sale online. Also try Peter Sliskovich's shop http://www.coupeking.com/ in Wilmington (LA Harbor area). Peter is a great source for parts and he has 02's for sale every now and then. Agood shop to do pre inspection purchase is Jack Fahuna's shop in Van Nuys. http://www.probimmer.com/index.php If you have real deep pockets, go to 2002AD in Pomona http://www.2002ad.com/pages/about.htm Highly recommend that you do not buy a 76 2002, they still have to be smog tested in CA and it's a bitch to get a 30 year old carb with carbs to pass smog. 75 and earlier are smog exempt in CA. G-Man
  14. Here are four west coast shops that have used wheels from time to time, also try 2002haus in SLO, Rob has some from time to time After your snow melts, try your salvage yards, Craigslist and the parts page of 2002faq.com Carl Nelson in La Jolla (San Diego) http://www.bimmerdoc.com/ Peter Sliskovich in LA http://www.coupeking.com/ Mesa Performance in Orange County, http://www.mesaperformance.com/ Double 02 Salvage in Hayward http://www.double02salvage.com/ G-Man
  15. Vroomer, I emailed the sponsors to ask that all the old BMW's, NK, E3, E9, & 1600/2002 have their own parking area at Bimmerfest so we aren't stuck in the middle of all the E46, E 60, E65 & E90's etc... They replied back saying that other older BMW owners have asked the same question and they were agreeable to my suggestion. "Thanks for writing, and thanks for your input. We are hoping to be able to figure out a way to efficiently accomodate your request - a request that other Classic BMW owners have made as well. I am reasonably confident at this time to say that we should be able to do it." One reason why I asked for a seperate parking area is that the E46, owners seemed PO'd that we parked next to them. They seemed to all have 20/22" bling bling wheels and stereo/video systems that cost more than my entire tii. Most of the newer BMW's there were driven by owners who looked about 22 years old who had no clue what a 2002 was and they didn't care; sad but true. All they cared about was they were driving a 50K BMW and they looked cool. Last year their were about a dozen 02's there, a few E9's as well. I going to talk up bimmerfest on the E3/E9 list so they hopefully they will be represented as well. I'll probably show up in my 70 E3 2800, the E46 crowd will go WTF is that... G-Man http://www.bimmerfest.com/events/2006SB/2006sb.php
  16. Go to the links page in 2002faq, go to cars for sale and click on the BMWCCA link, In the Roundel classifieds, this ad is posted about an M42 engine transplant into a 71 2002. The owner Don Cichetti did this conversion in the late 90's when all 2002's had to pass smog. Believe me it's a bitch for a 30 year old car to pass smog with carbs. Now the car is smog exempt but at the time of the conversion, it wasn't. If you have any questions about the conversion, contact Don, and make sure you have deep pockets, the conversion wasn't cheap because a lot of parts had to be fabricated for the M42 engine to fit. Carl Nelson did the mechanical work for the conversion. G-Man 1971 2002 2572847 Agave/tan, professional M42 conversion, 30k on engine, runs very nicely, handles great, 5-speed, radiator, Bilsteins, Borbet 14" wheels, Ireland lug stud conversion with custom spacers, beautiful new paint, rebuilt/recovered seats, new carpet, much more. Over $15k invested. Pics available. $7,995. 951 509-7954; dcicchetti@urs2.net. (CA)
  17. Jon, If you remember when your turbo was at Bill Holmes shop in San Diego, Bill seemed always to have one or two tourings at his shop. I used to drool over those tourings and your turbo every time I was at Bill's shop when he was working on my tii or E3. Congrats to a big score. G-Man
  18. I recommend you fill in the side marker lights on your 02. Without them, it gives it that Eurp spec look. Then replace your bug eye front turn signal lights with the flat Euro front signal lenses. I wish I had filled them in when I had my 02 reapainted ten years ago. Everything must come off the car to include the windows, at least I did that ten years ago. G-Man
  19. Lori, did you ever check with coupe king? He's got a wearhouse full of old BMW parts Gordon
  20. I've never heard of a Devin, Can someone enlighten me about these cars? G-Man http://losangeles.craigslist.org/car/132749189.html
  21. I second or third that opinion, go see Jim or Spence at Mesa. I would hate to add up all the receipts for how much I've spent there the past few years. G-Man
  22. Delia, Take the whole 02 if you have a place to store it. I firmly believe that anyone that has a 35 year old car needs a parts car. Who knows, it could be a future project car for a daily driver. Of course you'll bring OJ out on nice days. G-Man
  23. Make sure Mark joins the Senior six registry and joins the rest of the insane asylum. Congrats off to Mark, I own two E3's besides my tii G-Man 74 tii, 5 speed, lsd, sahara 73 Bavaria, 5 speed, Weber's, Alpina's, malaga 70 2800, 4 speed, Euro spec, totally stock except for Nardi wheel, 95K original KM's on car, granada
  24. Mike, I've been deployed to Tampastan for a month and I've only seen one other 02 the whole time and that was here on base at MacDill. A 75/76 fjord with a Maxwell/gunter sticker on it, owner must be TDY here. G-Man
  25. In 2004, I was working in Germany for a few months working at Ramstein Air Base, I went to Veterama http://www.veterama.de/en/index.htm Walking through this automotive swap meet in Ludwigshafen Germany, I stumbled onto a vendor that was selling a used crack free one piece Euro spec 02 dash without the fasten seatbelt billboard or the gearshift pattern (US market only) imprinted on the dash. I quickly bought it for 120 Euros (about 150 bucks), mailed it back to the states where my 74 2002tii was in coupeking's shop in LA where they installed it. I had to cut the hole out for the tii clock, no big deal. My old dash looked like the grand canyon with as many cracks as it had. I pinch myself, wow, what a lucky score I stumbled on to. I also scored a red tip antenna, very rare as well. G-Man
