  1. no tricks other than just take as much of it apart as you can, clean clean clean, then use a thin clock oil to lube up- and put all back together - as I remember you have to kind of go at it sideways - but eventually it just clicks back in. - (its possible mine was just easy, as its a '70) as for hesitating, check your cable as well, make sure it turns easily and freely---and that the ends are not broken off short -
  2. if you have a non-working 02 peedo now, id suggest tearing it down and clenaing. mine was all frozen up but only took about 30 minutes to get it working fine again.
  3. at first thought i cant see any reason you could not swap out the hubs - or if your good with a drill press, make a 5 hole pattern in place of the 4!
  4. yeah, before things sit right, you got 300-500 miles of break in time. go drive it a lot and worry if it keeps on after that.
  5. and at that, it only costs more to restore if you take into account the time that goes into it- or how much you are paying people to do the restore. - it didn't cost Tom 59k to restore the car-- but it might have cost that much for whomever was paying him - and what they payed for was the right to make the car like they wanted it - slightly odd choices and all. its tough to find someone that is willing to pay the same price to get a vehicle that is exactly as someone else wanted it. - but then again, lots of rich people have no imaginations - so i guess maybe
  6. cut it off unless you want to convert your seatbelts-- its just in the way.
  7. seems like a good question to me-- im just chiming in so i'll get sent an email when the reply comes-
  8. damn! that looks the business bro- cant wait to take a look. should be up around 6 or 7pm - if all goes well.
  9. I hate to say it, but as a guy who works in a gallery- i always notice the fun things. let your eyes unfocus on the 6 solex piece- tell me what you see. this is not a criticism, in fact, that is what makes it art. Nice shot! you should do a whole series and get yourself a show at a local cafe!
  10. Nice road! next time I am down I'll race you- heh. actually i shortened up my lean spot quite a bit - its almost to where I can let someone else drive without getting red-faced and making lots of excuses--- I think the new tires make it go faster! wider, smaller, and lighter! plus it looks excellent!
  11. this is advice from my vw van- because my 02 has always worked i havnt looked into it- BUT: I had a no go on the blinkers/hazards and tracked the problem to the steering column, where (in the van) a resister had been shoved up against metal grounding out the signal. I have no idea if the 02 has a resister in the circuit, but a black tape good wrapping of all the wiring where it rubbed against metal solved my problem. hoepfully its as simple as that-
  12. could be fuel- make sure your filter is clean and you dont have any cracks letting bubbles in.
  13. you should have swung south to the bay area, sometimes 02s line the streets here. I spotted a brown crested Alpina in south berkeley just the other day - I got pretty close without scaring it away, and it looked original!
  14. Nice tip! if its not gone - and it really does look in good shape - it will be in my car by the end of the week! i hope heh.
  15. guess ill just have to wait until i can get it up to Oregon- where I can use my friends shop - there is no way i'll ever have 3k to spare. just not the way my life goes-
  16. well, i dont need all of that, and also I dont have 3k! I know that if you are really good, you can replace the rings on an alfa without taking out the engine- not sure if thats possible on a 02- but they look similar in there!
  17. where did you get it done? and what are we talking with the rebuild?
  18. Anyone know of a good - fast - and reasonable mechanic who can do a piston ring job on my poor '70 02? how much are we talking, and can it get done next week is what I want to know- i need it it working better by next friday if possible! I live in the east bay, and can't deal with fixing it myself right now-
  19. ill take a look at that- id say at first that I am in california, and we have been having 80 degree weather with no rain - so I suspect everything is dry--- on the other had it did got real wet during the winter- could have corroded some stuff. I have the petronix, but dont know much about it. if it was regular old points id just do the normal thing- but the petronix was in when i got it- and i havnt messed with it. i am afraid it probably is the rings. I just wondered if bad timing might show itself as firing fine on one cylinder, but dropping others. timing has become a delicate touch since I went to side drafts- and its much easier to fix than rings!
  20. I'll adjust the gap - i thougth being a bit larger might actually help - and i am getting some blowby, but it seemed like it should not be enough to make such a difference. I do need new rings thats for sure- know anyone in the bay area that will do that job cheap? I have no garage space- just street parking -or id give it a try myself.
  21. Side draft solexes, stock range on the jets on a stock engine: clean fuel line, new filter, new plug wires - petronix: idles fine, sounds wonderful through the rpms while sitting still - dogs out when under load - misfires under hard acceleration. I recently drove it about 100 miles to see if it would even itself out. - it didnt really- but at the end of that, I checked my plugs- #1 = gunky black build up #2 = black, but no build up #3 = clean and perfect - no white or black build up - almost looked unused #4 = gunky black build up, but less than #1 Is this just timing? that my number 3 is hitting perfectly every time but the rest are not? They were all gaped at ~.34 I thought it might be fuel delivery, so I cleaned up the fuel line and all- didnt seem to help- maybe my pump is going? its also a stock mechanical-
  22. I was just at the salvage looking at lines - all he had were squares, but they all had return lines- I am thinking its a smog thing - possibly only california? I also noticed the lines were larger diameter than my '70 (which only has the send, not the return)
  23. While at the local 02 salvage place, I noticed that the (plastic) fuel delivery line for a later (75) model car was a larger diameter than the line in my '70 model. I also noticed that my 70 does not have a metal fuel return line of any sort- what is that fuel return for anyway(just a cali smog thing?), and if I am running a larger carb than the original solex on my 70, will the larger diameter fuel line help create a smoother flow? or does it really matter? -j
  24. well the 118 isn't doing me any good unless I buy a different car- so yeah, I am open to offers- i paid 30 bucks and drove 100 miles to get it. it comes with the cam, looks clean enough- no burned oil or anything- but no guarentees on cracks. I was going to get it tested but dont really want to shell out the 40 bucks for that now! heh. if no one wants it i guess I could keep the cam, if that 's exchangable - i should check, maybe its some sort of performance cam. thanks--
  25. So i went and picked up this head, just because it was cheap and i thought i could clean it up and have a nice replacement ready in case- Buddha forbid- it was advertised as a 121 head, and I didnt even notice until i got home that it is clearly stamped 118. Then I took a closer look at the head on the car - and noticed that it is stamped 121T - So what is the difference between the 118, the 121, and a 121T ? thanks!
