  1. looks to me like you were over-rich for some time. the single solex is a stand up carb but who knows, your float might have been out of balance for years. maybe someone more knowledgable than me will chime in, but I'm betting its gonna be tough to clean all that without taking off the head or having the car running. if its running shooting a ton of carb cleaner( its not just for carbs, it will clean any aluminum ) in there might work. even when its not running you could do it if you are careful . you don't want unburned carb cleaner hanging out in there- is my understanding anyway - its pretty caustic stuff and will do a number on your seals if it sits. easy method - go ahead with the conversion and clean it up after-- it should all burn off if its running with a bit of cleaner and some serious rpm driving.
  2. wow, I'm with you: thats a lot of crud. ive seen quite a few intakes and not ever seen that. what carb where you running?
  3. a little back on topic: I don't like the miata because it looks like plastic. i dont like any car that looks like plastic. I also don't like any car with a computer controlled fuel system. I dont like any car i can't look under the hood and immediately identify every part - and im not smart enough to intuit computer chips. My wife and I now share a 84 vw rabbit injected convertable. (precurser to the later cabrios - but looks better and was made better) CIS mechanical injection and 5 speed, basically a GTI that you can take the top down. I was not sold on our old 86 cabrio with an auto tranny, but this 84 is awsome - a completely different ride - and its got me pining for my alfa - and the beauty of mechanical fuel injection. sure, the opening of side draft carbs sounds wonderful, and you get that pure rush of throaty power - but, recalling the hay days when Rush and Yes (the bands - circa 1979) were teaching us the meaning of pure mathematical virtuosity - its a sort of guilty pleasure a SPICA,KF, or CIS can give you. maybe i just need a tii-- heh.
  4. 350 is a little small - admittedly. i had a 450 in hawaii and that was just about perfect for the island where everything is within 1 hour - no matter where you are. I had a 650 in japan and even that small jump was a big jump in acceleration. that was a lot more dangerous. 350 is definately not a long haul bike, but its great for tooling around.
  5. i was also thinking of a motorcycle. got mana's car - so thats one, could just get a bike. guy was gonna trade me his old honda for my vw van, but i needed the cash so i sold the van. but now thinking.. hmmm.. bikes are good on gas as well. i was thinking a little more in my price range: like this one: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/mcy/277292097.html looks pretty sweet. just got to tear down the carb and shit. i can do that.
  6. yeah, i got like 500 dollars worth of alfa suspension in the shed. thats a start- i find that as a street mechanic, i can only take a car so far--- im good at taking a car that doesn't run at all, and has been say sitting around for a couple years or something. and making it a fairly reliable car to drive about--do the brakes, clean up small engine trobules, wiring, replace parts etc etc but its hard to get much further cause of limited resources. im sort of the middle man. i take a non-op project and make a driving project out of it, and then i hit a wall. its time to pass it on to someone who can take the next step-- kinda like that--
  7. you got money and a parking space, i got no money and street parking. i'm a guerella mechanic dude! plus im married! heh.
  8. you would be surprised at the parallels between an alfa spider and an 02 -> the spider has the same basic chasis and engine suspension as the alfa GTV - which was the direct rival to the 2002 as the first sport sedan - and they learned alot from eachother. an 02 has the independent rear suspension on its side and the better gear box, the alfa has slightly better stock hp (dual overhead cam) and rear disk brakes, and a 5 speed even if the box is less durable. the SPICA injection system on many is basicaly the same as the KF and who do you think invented the webers everyone swears by on their 02s? heh. ive had a roadster, drove one for 2 years as my daily-- i kinda miss it--
  9. I woke up this morning with the singing in my ears for an italian roadster-- you know, an alfa romeo, or maybe even a fiat if its pre 1971 -- what does this to do with my 02? well, i can only handle one project, and no space to store an extra one. I love my 02, but sometimes feel that i loved my alfa more - > I sold it to raise money to go to Japan and well, i really loved that car - and so it seems does the guy who drives it now (hes all loved up with it up in oregon) damn! getting project remorse-- thinking about trading projects to an alfa! just thougth id share-- its a sort of desease! anyone got an alfa they want to trade for a '70 2002? heh. anyone want to talk me out of it? anyone talk me into it?
  10. my bro always thought it would be cool to integrate a little radar detector into that area. - if you could do that then it wouild be real cool. worthy a ncie write up in the FAQ!
  11. got a good source for those thermo switches? mine is just direct wired (with the relay) to the main fuse-- works fine but yeah, always on.
  12. we will see how this goes and I might take you up on that. I actually have a 121t head on the car which is fince cept the valves are pretty shot. so as for a core-- i got one! heck, i got a e12 adn a 118 head laying around as well. -- the e12 is in nice shape actually, but i want to keep with the 121
  13. hey, thats cheap-- but not CHEAP- which is where I live - i sent him an email but have not heard back. ill bid when its closer-- but probably get aced out by a bot - I am no good at the last second bidding on ebay-- its too much trouble for me to bother with and thus most of ebay has become too much trouble.
  14. you can buy high quality mylar from any decent artist shop/ its like 4 bucks a yard or something. -- i got a giant roll if you want some and can pick up in the mission district SF--> it would totally bring it back, just cut the shapes and glue in.
  15. thanks: found it here too: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=2552&mospid=47140&btnr=12_0924&hg=12&fg=05 ill look through my parts bin-- maybe it's laying in there--
  16. i run solex phh (ti) and don't have any clearance trouble with a stock (no dismantle) pump. if you have the ti manifolds there should be no issue as the angle is enough for plenty of clearance. hey, if you need a regular old stock one part mechanical fuel pump, i have 3. though one is suspicious-- 10 bucks and shipping ill send you the better one.
  17. whats this "historical vehicle"- explain more please!! if one can get out of smogging a 76 this is a big deal ---
  18. you guys should get a dd 02 in decent shape-- and spray the whole undercarraige with that truck bed protector - spray rubber stuff- it would add weight, but distributed evenly it wouldnt be bad-- and probably help make a quieter ride and totally protect from the salt. maybe not for your show car, but if you want an 02 for your daily driver-- i think it might just work. its in my mind if i ever move back to the snow belt---
  19. so a local guy was selling his yellow top optima for 75 bucks-- it tested out ok so i got it. - its not the smallest kind, so its a little big for under the seats like i wanted so i might go with trunk - but hell-- this way if I want to run some monster stereo system or put in heated seats or something ill be fine! heh. its a good thing i did too, my regular battery is on its way out-- which is one reason im in a hurry to make the transfer- thanks for all the input---
  20. is the resister the little cylinder behind the distributer, on the firewall? I put in an ancient (original? ) black coil and holy crap its shooting out power - maybe too much power!-- so i'm worried the the resister is no longer part of the circuit as an aftermarket coil was installed (with a petronix - red and black directly to the coil???) where should the resister be, what does it look like, and yeah-- thats the idea! thanks! BTW: I put this coil in and suddenly my car is runing much better, but my alternator light goes on. hmmm. i think its pulling way too much--
  21. yeah - pistons! but really just having the head would help my beast out. i got solex phh which are just aching to roar a little louder with a nice upgraded head--
  22. yeah, it will probably skyrocket. i got a e12 head attached to a whole engine - since mine is working ok now i thought id tear it all down and see whats inside. it was free from Brian down south - came with his parts car. its probably better than the engine i have-- but i rather have the 121 that fits the year than an e12-
  23. yeah, he seems to have the good stuff too- other auction is a close ratio steering box - Mike Hannigan: is he a FAQer?
  24. on ebay, which I try not to do - but this is exactly the sort of work i want done on my 121 head - and here it is-- already done! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-121ti-Cylinder-Head-w-272-Cam-for-BMW-2002_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33617QQihZ013QQitemZ230087365398QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW I know many people will say its best to get the work done yourself, do it right- but you got to understand - its all about the best i can do for the car with the least amount of money!
