  1. I had the suspicion that was your situation. Stock 2002 brakes are awesome out of the box. Of course, the assumption is that the components are in good shape and the rear drums are adjusted correctly. In ITB, 2002s are known to have an advantage in braking. ITB does not allow modifications in the brake size. I have had stock 2002 brakes on my 69 track car, and even under track conditions and with R compound tires, I never ran out of brakes until I installed the M20. For a street car, even driven aggressively, it is very unlikely that 2002 brakes lack braking power. What they may need is a good choice of pads and a proper adjustment. Good freash fluid helps too. Rear discs have one advantage over drums. They don't need adjusting. But they don't provide additional braking power. In fact, if not adjusted properly with a proportioning valve, they may apply too much braking to the rear which is another problem. (Adjusting them is not that easy either.) It would be a total bummer if your spent all this time and money on an "upgrade" and end up with "just as good" or even worse brakes than before.
  2. I won't try to discourage you from doing this "upgrade." However, I am curious to know what you mean by your "needs."
  3. If the car "purrs like a kitten" which I undestand to mean that it runs purrfectly, then you obviously have a problem with the cold starting mechanism/choke etc. Does the car run well when warm? No hesitation, hiccups, lack of power, sputters etc? If so, the issue is definitely in the warm up cycle of your carburetor.
  4. I suggest you do a search and read up on that conversion. There are issues with it that have been described in detail numerous times on this board. Also check the Ireland website. They sell the Volvo kit but they modify it to address some of the issues with it.
  5. NM, NA. A little humor for this Christmas day. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/pts/3458822285.html
  6. The rotor can only fit one way. There is a notch on the distributor shaft that matches a tab on the rotor. If you get some totation, it is the shaft rotating through the mechanical advance. The rotor should not spin on the shaft when in place. Look at the contact at the center on the inside of the cap. That's the part that touches the center of the rotor when it's installed. It is spring loaded and sometimes, it can fall off. If it does, you need a new cap. Also check your wires, especially the one from the coil to the cap. It may come partially undone, loose or disconnected. Check the wires connecting to the primary circuit on the coil. Let us know what happens.
  7. Would that be the Volvo set up? Rotors: I would buy new.
  8. I have been accused of being able to perform mechanical miracles... such as... poof! see? I just attached the motor to the engine on that Bavaria.
  9. I found this older post. It may give you some ideas. http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,0/page,viewtopic/p,809621/#809621
  10. I am off for the winter break. Door panels. Yeah. Everyone needs those unfortunately. Would love to have a ti/02 day for sure. Email me when you come to town.. Cheers.
  11. I just bought a 95 318ti parts car. I am seriously thinking of putting the M42 in a 2002. Anyone need parts?
  12. I have a 69 2002 with an M20 engine and the E30 transmission that came with it off the 87 325i. My 2002 was an automatic and I did not cut any of the tunnel.. Yes, I did have to bang on the tunnel to get clearance. But no cutting. If you get an E21 transmission, it has to be from the 6 cylinder Euro 323i with the M20, not from the US car with the M10. I have heard that the M42 transmission fits too but I can not confirm it. The reason people go with the 32i E21 tranny is for the speedo drive. But those transmission are getting very hard to find. Luckily, there are other speedo solutions to address the problem. Do a search.
  13. Andrey, I read your post and it sounds chinese to me. When you use terms like "basically", "I am pretty sure you can build one yourself," and "easy soldering," I feel stumped. I have built motors, swapped an M20 in a 2002, installed an M52 into my 318ti, including some pretty nasty wiring, I must have removed and installed over 20 cylinder heads. My mechanical abilties and understanding are above average. A VR frequency to voltage converter, an amplifier... not exactly typical for a shade tree mechanic. Or am I the only one who does have a clue what a DIP is? It's like that friend of mine who told me how simple it was to replace this guy's heart valve. Slice the chest open, cut a couple of hoses, replace the tricuspid or perform a ring annuloplasty and saw it back together. Piece of cake. Now, if it really is a simple operation that an semi-intelligent person can actually understand without a master degree in electrical engineering, do share more intricate details so that the rest of us can build one. It would be a huge service to a lot of us who enjoy the challenge and lack the funds to fork over bg bucks to have somone else do it. Thanks.
  14. It looks to be a device that can convert a pulse signal into a spinning cable to drive a stock speedometer. Anyone try it? It would resolve the problem of looking for an E21 323i transmission for an M20 swap, oe even using the later 5-speed from the E30 318i into the 2002. Anyone have any experience with it?
  15. Who's this Gillard dude? Obviously a scammer. I may have a mirror.. I have to go through my stash of parts. The one I have is from a 325is, not an M3. But I suspect they are the same. What are these things worth these days?
  16. You will need a smog pump, EGR valve setup and associated plumbing and the thermal reactors. That's for the visual inspection. Will it pass?? What carb does it have? Thermal reactors are a big problem. They are expensive, and generate a lot of heat which causes heads to crack. What a lot of people do is run the smog pump into an earlier manifold, with EGR valve and install a cat. I have the smog pump, EGR and most everything else that came off an earlier car. You can have them, free. I don't have the thermal reactors. And I'm very local.
  17. And I have the brackets to mount those monster Oscars without drilling your bumpers.
  18. 6-cylinder in your compact?
  19. These are not Ford products. They are made by an independent manufacturer and Ford has allowed them to do so. I am sure if someone wants to build a 2002 shell and asks BMW for permission to do, they would probably not mind. All it will do is generate additional business for their BMW Classic parts, regardless how crappy those parts are.
  20. I have a complete tobacco interior. $500 for all of it. I'm in So Cal too.
  21. I have 3. No emblems. Not perfect but very presentable. $60 shipping included.
