How much 2002 Tii sell for if manufactured today?

If BMW produced the 2002 Tii today, what price range do you think it would fall into?

$15-$20,000? $20-25,000? $25-30,000?

I just got thinking about it just and am curious if anyone else has any thoughts about its value if new and sold today?

Thanks,

I remember around 5 k on the showroom floor. dollar bought about 4 DM's. Today:

it takes about $1.50 to get a Euro at the bank today in Brunssum NL

guessing one DM = 1 Euro oops

20 k euro 30 k dollar? Now pay the increased cost ? or ????

Go figure my forster sells for 50 k Euro in Holland .

Here are the results from a website I like to use every once in a while...

www.measuringworth.com

Current data is only available till 2008. In 2008, $5,500.00 from 1972 is worth:

$28,295.50 using the Consumer Price Index

$22,402.06 using the GDP deflator

$29,489.07 using the value of consumer bundle

$26,894.83 using the unskilled wage

$44,230.15 using the nominal GDP per capita

$64,163.26 using the relative share of GDP

You can do all the present value math you want, but the real answer is the tii as we know it, could not be manufactured today. It would not pass crash tests and the construction using 2002-like materials could not be pulled off in today's green mfg. convention. Enjoy the unique, abeit antique, vehicles they are. The appeal is that they are not disposable or made out of plastic.

More former BMW's than it is possible to list.

Yeah, it's far too dangerous to drive one on the roads today.

You can't crash it into a wall at 45mph and walk away.

Most of the manufacturing techniques used are not practiced much in the

US anymore, so it'd have to get farmed out.

we're doomed.

Thanks,

Just for comparison if I have it right, MSRP for a 1969 Datsun 510 was $1996, 1973 Tii $5233 and my brother bought a new 1967 Olds 442 for $4000. I guess a pony car should be thrown in there too but...

In 2010 MSRP on a 430 hp Corvette starts under $50000. The low end BMWs are in the $30k-$35k range. I infer from this that both American and German manufacturers have gotten better at lowering manufacturing cost so they are now in line with Japanese and Korean manufacturers.

Understanding what others have said about safety and tossing in I know engineers just can't leave their hands off of anything. They would rather screw something up so they can say "I did that" then leave something that doesn't need fixing alone. You would end up with a front wheel drive hatch back. Add to that that BMW won't want to compete with themselves by producing a low cost model that will hurt sales of their upscale models.

It could be done for your lower end range, $15k-20k. Figure tooling is ready and engineering is done. They could set up a factory in the former eastern block and produce something good for that price.

....it's now called LOTUS

I disagree. Lotus(es?) do not have a usable back seat or trunk, two of the factors that make the 02 so desirable.

As far as how much one would cost nowadays, compared to everything else on the market, I'd say in the low to mid $40k range.

I've been this way since I was born.
