MG Mitten vs Vilem B. Haan

... for your sporty car needs

I seemed to favor shopping from the MG Mitten catalog

because of the great drawings by DEAL. Seemed

friendlier than the cold glossy color photo layout

of Vilem B. Haan. Maybe because MG Mitten offered

a motorcycle cover, and other bits that were biker

friendly. Look at those HEUER watch prices !!

Which outfit would you spend your 1966 dollars with ?

There is a NOS Porsche parts dealer called "The Sierra Madre Collection" that is operating out of the old MG Mitten building (I think...).

Catalogue definitely brings back some memories. Still have my air horns, also.

It's a toss-up between the two...

I loved the artwork by the late Dave ("Big") Deal for Marion Weber's MG Mitten catalogs. Deal's effortless illustrations were emblematic of 1960s Southern California car culture and also graced the covers of "CARtoons" magazine. His work was greatly influenced by his mentor and sometime roomate, Kenneth "Von Dutch" Howard. Recent work included the car designs for the Pixar animated feature film, "CARS."

Vilem B. Haan (he died a few years ago) was the first president of the Ferrari Owners Club and held membership card number 1.

The sophisticated photo ads set the standard for subsequent aftermarket suppliers (like Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories and Griot's Garage) by presenting items like Talbot mirrors and string-backed driving gloves as high-fashion accessories for your car.

CD - you are officially dating me on my bday (sniff , sniff).

My carburetor synchrometer (Uni-Syn) is the first illustration. I must admit I didn't buy it from MG Mitten (Gene Berg Enterprises in CA).

Delia:

I too loved their "Big Deal" illustrations and absolutely loved to read CARtoons magazine (Krass and Bernie was my favorite story). I believe Mr. Deal illustrated for other companies such as Big Wheels, Jackman Wheels and maybe Dick Cepek, Denman, KC Hilites, among others.
