Likely manufactured late May 1973.  But get a BMW Archives report by emailing them with your car's VIN (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com).  Then share your car's report here!

Thanks, that clears up what would have been a material "VIN-out-of-sequence" issue.

And it also suggests that tii VIN's AT LEAST FROM 2762639 to 2762681 were manufactured on Tuesday, October 10, 1972 (my list shows 2762632 being manufactured on Saturday, October 7, and 2762688 being manufactured on Wednesday, October 11).  Thus, at least 43 U.S.-spec tii's would have been manufactured on October 10, 1972.

Manufacturing question:  how many snorkel nosepieces were pulled from inventory on October 10, 1972?   Ahhh, trick question!  ?

Regards,

Steve

1972   VIN 2760108  born in Aug. 1971   Chamonix (now Fjord)

Do you have a BMW Archives email that confirms this August 1971 manufacturing date?  It is the earliest date I have seen for a U.S.-spec tii. Moreover, the closest VIN's I have to 2760108 are 2760007 (October 20, 1971) and 2760156 (December 17, 1971). These two VIN's would suggest your car was manufactured between October 20th and December 17th. But if it is an August car, it's certainly one of the very first completed and then we must explain why the 7th tii (2760007) was manufactured two months later, and the 156th tiki was manufactured four months later! The facts will be the facts. August manufacturing dates for '02's are extremely rare under any circumstances -- usually very early August, representing the last examples of the prior-year model or very late August, representing the first examples of the following-year model -- because the factory was closed for most of August for holiday and re-tooling

Yeah, I was going by memory, which is never a good idea. Will email BMW again since it's easier than finding an email from years ago :)

A search of my email on "Hoffman Motors" usually finds Archives emails for Hoffman era '02's (pre-early-'75)!

2760048 checking in here :) with Atlantik Blue on black in California.  The car lived in Oakland for much of its life, and came with $20K in receipts over the last three decades.

Here it is getting loaded on its journey to my dad's VW shop in Sonoma County.

Very early!  I'm guessing October 1971.  Very desirable color!

What does your BMW Archives report say regarding manufacturing date?  (Email your VIN to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com.)

Congrats on the acquisition!
