Need help sourcing some early 1600 parts. Blunt? Anyone?

I'm having a hard time coming up with some more early 1600 parts. I have the 6V stuff under control - now I'm on to the brakes.

I need a rebuild kit for an early single line MC without the hydraulic clutch as well as for the single piston calipers. I have found many kits for dual piston calipers - but they all specify dual piston only.

I also need all new brake lines - but I imagine those are the same as 2002 lines just fewer in quantity?

In addition, does anyone make the pressure plate and disc for the mechanical clutch?

Hey Patrick,

I can help you out. I think I have a spare MC kit I can sell they are long NLA but I think I have 2, and a complete NOS MC itself but thats not for sale :) I also have a nearly new pressre plate I can sell and probably a new clutch disk. You can get a plate from Maximillian but they are like $800, mine is much much cheaper! Email me pls.

Also I got rebuilt calipers from 2002haus.com for about <$300 a pair with shipping, no core. They are fully rebuilt and painted etc, looked new. Brake lines are the same as a 2002 I believe. You can get them from any BMW parts place.

I'd like to try to rebuild mine myself. Maybe I'll give them a call and ask about the prices. I always have trouble with the board email - What is yours? you can email me @ patrick(dot)sloan2(at)memorialhermann(dot)org.

Thanks!

I don't know if he will have the kit, its long NLA. I think I have that kit too but not sure if I want to part with it just in case mine blow later. He sends them out to a place for rebuilds he told me. They probably have a source for generic metric size caliper parts I imagine.

Pat,

Check with Apple Hydraulics.

Mostly British stuff but they have a good rep for fixing the impossible.

Opel single piston calipers fitting the early 1600s...perhaps the kits do too. If you'll drop me an e-mail at home I can look up the reference 4U.

And if the pressure plate is the same as the pre 1665200 (six bolt flywheel) plates as used on the 2002 (and isn't smaller) there's a VW (!) place in CA that had those pressure plates cheap. I got one from 'em a couple of years ago new in the box with a mfg date of 1982!

pat,

thew 1502 and early 1600 have a lot of parts in common, the front brakes are similar both single line and you can get the caliper rebuild kits from any parts dealer, tell 'em it is for a 1502/1600. the clutch disc and plate is similar too except the 1502 is hydraulic. the brake mc cylinder from the 1502 will bolt directly on your 1600. you can also use an e21 brake caliper and disc better stopping power.

see pics of 1502 clutch kit

cheers,

dave

You can get the calipers, rebuilt from Kragen for about 80 bucks each. I was going to convert to the first-year 320i calipers (single circuit) but decided to stick with the original pn since Kragen had them. They've been fine on my car since I redid the brakes 4 years ago at that time they were only about 45 bucks a pop.

Drove 'em for about a year, the lots of parked time in inclimate weather, then just hopped in and did a 1200 mile trip over 2 weeks. Fun.

If you really want to do them yourself, try Paul Del Grande in Campbell for the rebuild kits, or JC Whitney, or keep an eye on squeeBay.

why list 'em...they're all projects anyways!
