Which is the right basketweave?

Hello everyone!

I am looking for a good set of 14 inch 6.5 b weaves and found these 2 examples. The one I do not like so much :

14inchstrangebasketweaves.jpg

and the ones I really like:

14inchBBSbasketweaves.jpg

Although they are both posted by the sellers as the 14" BBS basketweaves that should have the proper offset, something doesnt seem to be right here as the wheels DO LOOK DIFFERENT. Look at the part where the spokes meet the outer edge of the rim>> Which one is the proper one here?

TIA!

The top wheel is off the E30....nice upgrade. The lower wheel was an option on 320i's I believe...not as wide...I believe that wheel is only 5.5 or 6" (probably 6") wide.

Either wheel will work on an '02...although I believe the offset on the lower wheel is not as user friendly....if the car is lowered it may rub the fender lips.

The E30 offset is ET30 as I recall..perfect for an '02.

Hope this helps,

John

Yes indeed I missed that 5 lug pattern on the second one (thats what noobs are for).

OK so are you implying that the 13 inch 4x100 wouldnt work on the 02 without modifications (fender roll/spacers?)

I saw these on the for sale section..they apparently came out of a tii..http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/t,287363/

Same with the ones Bavauto are selling, I just called them and they said that the offset is 18... isnt ours 29? They also happen to be 13 x 5.5 as opposed to the ones above 13x 6...

man I am more confused now!

...with some usual rolling of fenders to clear the outside, if those are 185/70-13 tires. If they are 205/60-13's then they will NOT fit w/o major fender rolling/trimming and a car that's not lowered very much if any.

wheels with an 18-20 mm offset. They might work with narrower tires, and they might work with fender rolling/stretching, but with a 24-30 mm offset you'll have more tire width options and more clearance.

Thanks all for the input.

I have been dealing with wheel choices in the past with my other rides and I am very stubborn when it comes to wheel offset and such. I am not a spacer guy thats for sure and VERY MILD fender roll will be OK. I do like the look of the 13's though over the 14's due to the part where the spokes meet the rim (yeah I'm picky). I know there is someone local here with the 13s on his 02..I gotta dig it up...

Wheel choices are really tough for the 02, But I am all over it so we'll see

The 13 inch BBS off the E21 fits some cars better than others. I have a set on my 69 2002, lowered significantly, with 205-60-13 tires, rolled fenders and rubbing is minimal. and at the extremes only.

The biggest issue with 13 inch tires is the availability of nice sticky tires. The best upgrade IMHO is a 15 inch wheel 22-24 offset with 195-50-15 tires. There are plenty of nice choices in this size.

I do have a set of BBS 13 inch wheels off an E21, that have been blasted, painted and clearcoated with brand new Yokohama AVS intermediates mounted and balanced, 185-60-13. For sale. $500 + ship.

I've been running the 13x5.5 E21 bbs wheels on my lowered 74 for about a year and a half, with 195/60/13s. No rubbing at all, except for in the very tightest autocross corners. Even then, I didn't hear any rubbing, and it simple rolled the fender lip a little and saved me the trouble of doing it myself.

With that said, I recently switched to 14" E30 BBS wheels for better gearing on the highway, and to make me feel better about the offset. The E21 wheel offset may increase bearing wear, and have other inherent problems because its not ideal for the geometry of the suspension.
