Back in the day, there was a company that made and sold replacement glass sunroof panels for BMWs.  IIRC they had stainless steel rims around the glass, which was heavily tinted.  They were a drop in replacement for the OEM metal panel.  I seem to recall them available for E30s and E21s, not sure about 2002s.  I do remember they were advertised in the Roundel back in the 80s.

 

What's illustrated above is a stealth sunroof panel.

I got excited when I saw the title of this post
I'd actually wondered if that was a possibility.
And then when I took apart my sunroof it seemed like there's just too much going on to think about it, although I was still wondering if I could use an extra sunroof to experiment with to use as a frame.
