BASF Diamont Paint Formula Pastel Blue 044

Recommended Posts

My 75 2002 was in an accident, I'm taking it to the body shop next week.  The body shop has a BASF Diamont paint machine, however his formula book does not go back to 1975.  I'm hoping the someone can help me with the formula Pastel Blue 044.  Thanks  Ron

In your place, I have gone to the local autobody supply,

had them look it up in other systems, and then translated that into

the system the shop uses.  They have a cross- reference chart- or BASF should.

all I got,

As far as I've come to learn, Glasurit is the BASF product that BMW uses. Congrats for finding a shop that does BASF; not as many do.

You can use this tool to get the formula. It's pretty finicky and awkward to use. I couldn't get it to do what I want just now, but see how you make out.

https://coloronline.glasurit.com/

22 line is single step (non-clearcoat) and may be what you want

55 line is solvent based basecoat / clearcoat

90 line is waterbased and definitely not what was used from the factory, but if the shop can do water-based, it could still be the way to go.

And, Sorry to hear your 2002 was in an accident! :(

If it's a metallic (I thought it was) you definitely want base- clear.

Was basecoat / clearcoat a thing in '75?

The glasurit coloronline tool was kinda wacky today cuz I could only get it to show 90 line and I'm pretty sure there was no water-based in '75.

No, the Pastel Blau isn’t a metallic. I had my car resprayed with a single stage Pastel Blau and it came out pretty nice.  But the next time will probably be 2-stage since that’s what most painters are familiar with nowadays.

+1

The “PVC free” versions of Glasurit’s two-stage metallic paints were introduced in 1973. As had been their previous single-stage metallics, the two-stage metallics were a friggin’ disaster. Horizontal surfaces — e.g., hoods, roofs, deck lids — generally failed within 2-3 years. I’d say Glasurit’s paint-testing processes were… wholly inadequate!

Recognizing that this post adds absolutely nothing to this thread, I had to jump in since Glasurit’s miserable two-stage paint, and BMW’s equally miserable handling of its early failure, led to my 34-year boycott of BMW’s… 😟

I’m feeling a bit better now. Thank you for listening. 😋

Regards,

Glad you're feeling better now :)

My 2002 was resprayed with Glasurit Arktisblau > 6 yrs ago and, while not applied well, seems to have held up well. I'm going with Tanzanite II.
I've been going out of my way to track down a place that does Glasurit. Would I be better off with PPG?

If you're paying someone else to spray,

let them spray the system they like best.

Within reason, of course.

PPG, Sikkens, BASF, hell, even the top- line M-S are all fine products.

Applied well over good bodywork, you'll be happy.

When you go into a restaurant, you accept the 'supplier choices' as part of the meal.

The material is just one ingredient

in a finish on a car...

Now, if you're going to the grocery store, it's just good sense to pick your

ingredients carefully, and do your research.  I learned the PPG systems because

several different supply shops knew it well, and by shopping at all of them,

I got their support when I screwed up, when they mis- mixed, and when things

none of us understood at first went wrong.  And that was well worth the slight

price premium I paid over the counter.

As to modern paints-

we're spoiled.

Paints used to last 5 years if you waxed them daily.  Then you wore through them.

Now they last 20 years if we don't pour acid on them and set them on fire.

At the time all the paint manufactures had the same problem, the u/v protection added at the time would add a yellow tint to the finish so it was used sparingly, if at all, this lead to a expansion and temperature difference that sooner or later broke the bond between the base coat and clear coat.

No kidding! I got a dented Hyundai door from a body shop to practice welding on. My grinder had a wire wheel on it when I went to strip it - after about 30 seconds I realized I needed some 80 grit - the wire wheel barely dulled the shine. Crazy.
