1972 BMW 2002 Full Restoration

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Thought I would share my journey and continue to post if others are interested.  I received this car about a year or so ago and spent a lot of time researching prior to starting.  I have little experience with cars and/or restoration but a decent mechanical and electrical background.  I purchased a number of books and watched a lot of YouTube videos to get up to speed.

I am starting with the interior and trying hard very hard to stick to my set goals each day.  Once completed, I am removing the engine, front, and rear suspension.  Luckily, I found a retried master mechanic with 50 years of experience to assist with the engine.  I don't have a definite plan yet, but it will be a resto-mod modern conveninces with EFI and a full electrical upgrade.  My biggest challenge to date is working out of the third stall of my garage with limited storage.

I have attached photos of the work completed over the last three weeks.

Looks pretty solid!  You'll know more when you get those tar sheets off the floorboards with some dry ice.  Have fun and welcome.

One in that condition is what all prospective 02 owners dream of...

From the pictures you posted of the interior (contingent, or course on what's underneath the tar sheets on the floorboards) the typical "first floorboard rust spot" on the left hand forward corner of the driver's footwell (where cowl, floor and toeboard meet) looks sound.  Based on what looks like water streaks down the trunk's forward partition (behind the rear seat back) I'd also pull up the tar sheets under the back seat just to make sure a leaking back window gasket didn't pool water there...look first at the spot where the back seat riser meets the floorboard.  And check the spare tire well and inner rear wheel arches--other notorious rust spots.

Regardless, it looks like a great project that won't leave you frustrated with endless mission creep.  Welcome to the 02 fraternity/sorority, and don't be hesitant to ask questions.  Hope to see you at Mid America and/or Vintage in 2025!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
