Jay,

I want to see your turbo at the 2024 Vintage in Asheville, and in fine fettle. So whatever it takes… 😉

Best regards,

Steve

Historically, having the OEM turbo either in the engine bay or on a shelf was, at least, a $10k value enhancer.  Been over 20 years (or longer) that an OEM turbo could be ordered from the factory.

My issue with the modern ones is a leanness issue for the Kugel.  My Garrett wanted 15 PSI, which was too much for it, according to Korman.  I thought we could tweak the Kugel to give more fuel, no?

Not by much at full throttle without affecting the lower RPM.

I worked with Dave at Precision going through the fuel "map" to get the bmep higher. I wanted to see if we could get ~240 HP but no, the pump just can't deliver enough fuel regardless of boost. So we came up on the calculations that we "may" ideally get 200-210 HP with the stock 8lb boost.

We'll see, as there are so many variables, and that's a long way off.

Comparing @74turbojay's pic above with my ancient relic impeller:

Screenshot_2023_1015_125001.thumb.jpg.18a6a4136b4aa53f291eb09dcd6daca0.jpg  Screenshot_2023_1015_084745.thumb.jpg.f8d509a584b53e0006f2f9a059f44d22.jpg

They are both 6+6 design impellers but the new turbo seems a more modern design where the '+6' blades are 'higher' and closer to the main blades. On the relic the '+6' blades are low down and only protrude ~5mm from the base of the impeller.

I am no expert in impeller design, but my conclusion from the pics is that the new impeller is not identical to the old one and therefore likely an improved design which offers better spool than the old EB32G.

Of course, my relic has eaten it's fair share of road debris over the years and may have looked different back in 1974....

Apologies for the slightly off topic reply but I thought it was still relevant to the discussion -

So I reached out to Lütgemeier and they gave me they name of an Austrian company who " produced and produce, in cooperation with Lütgemeier GmbH, spare parts, what allows the repair of the original KKK turbocharger. " (including the exhaust housing) and "We reproduce all these parts in the original quality or in the best actual available quality, most of them much better than the original, in Germany, production date is 2023, no NOS. And of course in small quantities. Therefore we offer it to BMW 2002 turbo owners only."

This may not be who built the new factory units as they are stamped "Made in Sweden" but may turn out to be another viable option.

Any update on these new BMW units? I haven't seen anything on IG and Mobile Tradition is clueless.

My understanding is they’re sold out.  I can’t imagine they sold 100 of them at that price but it’s back-ordered with no ETA last I checked.
