Alpina vented rotor/caliper wheel clearance

I`m thinking/planning about upgrading to the true Alpina vented brake rotors and trying to verify if  the stock 5 inch Tii wheel would clear this fairly simple change. I will probably update to a Alpinai or some such  

 

Of course assuming one has the requisite TII struts and hubs zero offset wheel changes and using Turbo calipers with the requisite spacer will the stock Tii wheel fit over that combo?

Maybe I should get that Gert Hack book lol.

So you’re assuming approximately 8 mm spacers on the front hubs, to convert the ET26 stock tii rims to ET18 “turbo equivalents”, to solve the turbo caliper issue?

 

If it works, but is tight, adding an alloy rim to the mix might be an additional challenge, as most alloys are relatively thick-walled in comparison to steel rims.

You'd need the correct spacers. Turbo spacers are too fat thus requiring more shims under the caliper to keep the disc centered.

I can't speak for the standard 4 Piston Calipers but I know that the Porsche S Alloy calipers as used by Alpina need spacers to fit ti wheels. The Alpina Steelies, Borrani Steelies and Borrani Bimetall will fit over the Porsche Caliper. BTW: The Porsche Repro Calipers need spacers and machining of the Hub as they're not an exact copy of the old ATE.

I ran true Alpina vented rotors on my tii for a good long while.  No idea what they were made of, but I will say they didn't seem to wear.  Expensive as hell even back in the day (80's).  $250/ea.  My recollection is that they are slightly smaller in diameter and width than the Turbo rotors.  Alpina = 255x20; Turbo 256x22 (I think).  Not sure on the fitment on a 5" wheel, sorry not much help.  I ran 6 and 6.5x13 Alpina alloys on mine.

I did the original vented Alpina disc conversion.  You must expand the calipers with an expansion kit or get other calipers that will accommodate the wider 20mm discs. The stock tii wheels will not fit without spacers. I went the sans-spacer route and installed 320iS BBS mesh alloys which fit (ended up with wider tires too). Experienced no rubbing on fenders.  One other adjustment was to place a washer under the stock (expanded) calipers so the discs would be centered.  Another change was installing turbo brake backing plates for better cooling when I found neu klasse backing plates with expanded front baffles wouldn't fit.

They looking strikingly similar to certain porsche rotors, one of my German friends told me looooooong ago, Alpina had contracted with 'Schwäbische Huettenwerke GmbH' to make these (and others) for them.  I ran across a set not that long ago that were at 19mm so hardly used 400bux, should have bought them.

Yes fell in the same pit, but now I know the trick is not to mount them in the stock place between strut and disc but to mount them to the inner side of the strut (like the calipers), then they'll feed the air nicely into the hub.
The Alpina discs by Schwäbische Hüttenwerke were not cheap GGG but Chromemoly

Thanks UAI! So the NK backing plates with air horns will work then great!! I already have the original Alpina rotors but should save them really though as they are new and get those other ones as you said UAI I visit that site regularly to drool and really like those rotors too!  So the 2002 turbo calipers would be a direct fit then with its spacer already there or so it seems? I think Walloth also has a set of those Alpina rotors as well... Please pardon the cosmoline!!

Yes, the turbo backing plates are a direct fit on tii stuts.  Didn't know you could attach the NK plates differently.  They do look really cool though (pardon the pun). I saw many mods on Alpina cars that cut out part of the NK backing plates.  Didn't want to go that route at the time.
