Is this a BMW Petri steering wheel?

Hey everyone,

a while ago I came acros a local listing of a few steering wheels online. I am a bit of a steering wheel collector, and a saw two nice Personal wheels, a personal imitation wheel, a (ruined) Moto Lita wheel and a to me unknown wheel. There were some hubs aswell. Two of them are for old VW's, and three of them are unknown to me. I had a feeling they were for some kind of BMW, because there was a BMW horn button included aswell.

I found out recently the unknown wheel was (I believe) called a Petri wheel. And that the BMW horn button belongs to it. But I cant find out what car this hub is for. Maybe a 2002 or an E9. In the middle of the hub is a BMW logo with ‘1.10977’. Can anyone help me out and shine some light on it? The plastic cover for the hub is also included.

The wheel itself isnt in that good of a condition. The size is 380mm, and the wheel is covered in some kind of foam. There are no markings on the wheel. The chrome is peeling and the centrering isn't looking that good anymore. The foam is still looking good though, so I'm thinking of polishing the spokes and painting the centrering. Or will the wheel lose its value because it isn't original anymore? I don't plan on keeping it because I don't have a car for it, and I'd rather use one of my lovely Nardi wheels. But I don't mind spending some time to freshen it up a but before sale time.

In the sale were also two identical hubs included. I think these might also be for a BMW, but I'm not sure. On the front it says 0156 and on the back 3120. There are no logo’s or brands on it. It looks like a Personal hub to me, but not sure. It does have the Personal hub pattern, being 6x74mm. Here are some photo's, maybe someone recognizes it?

Let me know what you think!

Thanks in advance,

....then the hub is 02.

the steereing wheel with 380mm diameter could be both, 02 or CSL. but the hub for CSL is longer.

I produce the hub covers. Here a pic to see the different lengths.

From left to right 02, E9 and CSL

The hub pictured in your last two is definitely 2002, as the CS coupes and senior six sedans had the opposite setup for the horn contact:  the contact ring was on the steering wheel hub, and the spring-loaded button was on the steering column surround.

If you examine the horn button closely, you may find it's English--possibly Lucas.  They're identical to those used on Austin Healeys, Triumphs and other Brit sports cars of the 50s-60s, but of course with their logos.  I have a horn button just like yours on my Personal wheel, an it's Lucas...

Thanks for the idea of joining those facebook groups! I sent them both a message about joining them.

And thanks Mike, good to know what car these hubs belong to. I will be putting them for sale soon.

As for the button, I don't see any Lucas on it. The only markings are 'Made in West-Germany'. But it does belong to the wheel and hub right?

The button should fit some (but not all) aftermarket wheels.  To make it tight on my Personal wheel/hub, I forced a piece of copper plumbing pipe inside the hub to keep the horn button from falling out.  That was back about 1986 or so and it's been working fine ever since.  I couldn't use plastic because the horn button grounds to complete the circuit and toot the horn.

If the fit is merely loose, you could try carefully spreading the spring-loaded clips that stick out from the undersides of the button.  That might be enough.

PS--I'll bet that button was made under license (or just pirated) from Lucas, as it's identical to the Lucas product!

That is a genuine Petri button and hard to come by. Look it up on eBay and you'd be surprised what they're going for. Which also goes for the wheel and hub. You can find replacement black button surrounds online.

You stole that Petri stuff for anything less than $750. If you did, you got a great deal.

Thanks for the tip! I'll look in to that.

Lets just say I payed less than $750 for it haha.

I'm still debating, but the best way of selling it would be cleaning it up I think? That be polishing the spokes, cleaning the foam some more, painting the centre and adding some new bolts.
