4 speed clutch fork won't stay put

Maybe I am just tired, or old, or old and tired..but,tyrying to get my 4 speed put back in and the clutch fork keeps falling out when I am close to getting trans stabbed.  My feelings are I have the spring in incorrect position.  Pic 1 (this way it always falls off)the spring is on underside of pivot ball but not under the lip.  Pic 2 (i have not tried this way yet) seems secure but I want to make sure before I install.  In pic 2 the spring is under the lip under the pivot ball.

I have looked online and on FAQ and I can not find the info I am after...any help is appreciated ....yes i have a manual but mine does not show whatIMG_1107.jpg.5f5aa862189fce5e5b0a1efa7e90de15.jpg it clips under

number one is correct.

compress the bearing into the

bell housing and then wire tie the

slave cylinder in the compressed

position. this will keep both parts steady.

then put the trans in. this way has been working for

me for the last 30 years.

Much approximated   I will try this.   Several people, on an FB page, have mentioned a rubber washer that goes between the ball wnd and the fork.   So you use this?

Pic # 2 is the correct way, because...

What are you guys talking about, picture # 1 is wrong. Buckeye is right, the spring has to be UNDER the lip.    What do you think holds the fork on?  If it is above the lip. think about it, it will just slide off.    Yes there should be a rubber "washer " between the fork and pivot but if not there, not the end of the world.   This is not just a flat or oring style washer, it is very specific.

Stephers you are right. I finally found in manual that when you remove the spring you pry it from under the collar, which is under the pivot

thanks!

so i stand corrected. thank you.

i put the fork on and then give it a

whack with my fist when i compress

the slave cylinder. maybe the spring

slips over the ball pivot and then

behind the shoulder. i will have to go

look at a trans to see if that happens.

the rubber washer just retains grease

for the pivot to lube the fork. i don't know

it all and i do learn new stuff all the time

thanks for the picture and the education.
