a '74tii Inka on BaT ...... over in the Netherlands

Buyer beware!  Read the advert:

"The engine was rebuilt while the car was being repainted, and the majority of external components were replaced once it was installed into the chassis. This included new cables, cap, rotor, contacts, condenser, and spark plugs. Fresh engine/transmission/differential oil, a new fuel pump, and new fuel lines were also added, and an updated battery has been fitted."

Last time I checked, an engine rebuild entailed more than "cables, cap and rotor".

If they cannot supply detailed photos of the rebuild as in my case, don't believe it.

I purchased a "completely rebuilt" '72 Inka Tii from Oldenzaal.  As they say, "Good from far, but far from good"!  I paid top price for a full "top-to-bottom" restoration as advertised.  It also came with a testimonial report and certificate.

Cosmetically it was beautiful, every bit as clean as this one, except mine was unfortunately completely covered in Dinitrol underneath.

They did a great job cleaning up the chassis and interior, They were forthright about replacing rockers, wheel wells, floor pans.  BUT they said clearly (as did their adverts) that the engine was recently "completely rebuilt".  Far from it.  Once I got it home and started driving it, it blew smoke like a crop-duster and burned 2 quarts of oil in the first 300 miles @ 10MPG.

I smelled a fish, so I had a local BMW specialist test the motor - compression was down below 8 PSI, O2 was up above 9 (should be 2.x-3.0), so I had them pull the head.  It was clear no work had been done on the motor.

I went back to O'zaal and complained - the story changed - "completely rebuilt" meant that a PO had done some engine work in 1986 28 years before O'zaal did a make-over for sale.  PO used undersized pistons (because the cylinders were already bored beyond 2nd re-bore; needed special-order 90.15), and the valve head that O'zaal claimed had been rebuilt that same week of purchase was a mess.  K'fish was set up 180 degrees out from TDC, oil rail was backwards so #4 was getting no oil, etc.

Ultimately I dropped big money to get the engine redone.  The front subframe was a mess, so I did that too.

During the rebuild the starter failed and the dizzy failed during run-in.

"From far" looked perfect:

Underneath. "far from good":

Once I proved the poor state of the engine and claimed under Consumer Protection, Oldenzaal changed their tune and offered to take the engine back on a palette and rebuild it.  At that point I no longer trusted them to do the right thing, so I insisted on a cash settlement.  It took many months of hassling Oldenzaal, and it was a lot less than the cost of the rebuild, but at least I know what I got:

Oldenzaal has a stable of nice-looking cars: Coupés, Alpinas, Glas, Z1s, etc.  I'm sure some of them are really good, but take a really, really careful look.

During my search for an '02, all other garages were happy to make a lift available for an underside inspection, they had photos of engine work, etc.  Not here.   It "ticked all the right boxes", so I did not look as critically as I did at the other candidates.  My fault for letting myself get lulled into complacency by the color, the cosmetics, the tall tale about the "complete rebuild". That independent inspection before purchase is worth it - do it!

All else aside, I sure like the underside of the car.  It looks beautiful.  I want mine to look like that.  Looking at the photos gives me more motivation to drop my rear subframe and refresh everything from there forward.

I hope this is a good car and goes to a loving owner.

This is actually the part I don't like on that car, the subframes and bits being rattle-canned as is.

Paul, here's something for you.  Been putting this little fellow together (not for sale, not trying to sell).

This reminds me of another InCa Tee eYe eYe for sale.

Bottom of car in un-molested in like new shape. Has been power washed and detailed in black paint for preservation, no undercoating.

I do too, Paul. It does look really clean.  I hope somebody gets a real screamer straight out of the chute.

I saw it just broke $38,000...approaching what I paid. I researched the FAQ forum for a year before I purchased.  Based on the advice I read, I thought to "buy the rebuild" because I didn't have the garage or detailed experience for rebuilding motors, welding, etc.  The interested buyer really should insist on photos of the motor rebuild!

For me, it has been a year since purchase, and I've only had a few weeks of driving time because of the motor disassembly/real-state report, negotiated settlement, 6-month wait for special-order 90.15mm pistons, then the motor build, front sub-frame rebuild, replace clunky front struts, worn rear brakes, starter, dizzy failure.  Not exactly "completely restored"!

I'm running a borrowed dizzy while mine gets the 123 Ignition treatment, and a borrowed tranny while I wait for a rebuilt 245/4/2 from Jim Rowe at Metric Mechanic (my mechanic could not rebuild mine for less (or better) than Metric Mechanic, even with shipping.

I (don't) have to say, but when I was inspecting my Tii, a repeat collector Customer from the US came in to O'zaal to look at a couple of B6 and B7 Alpinas. he had several positive experiences. I think the difference was that every car he had bought was still in original condition, so he wasn't paying for the " assumed" renovation (I must remember: " To assume makes an ass of you and me" ).

Absolutely gorgeous!  Attention to detail to say the least.  Such nice work.  Mine will never look that good.

In defense of the that Verona car, I think they are going for the original look of primered bottom with minor overspray of Verona red.  Unless I'm missing something, I don't see any overspray (that wasn't intended).  One discrepancy...the spare tire well bottom should be primered and painted Verona as well.

My car still has the beige/grey primer underneath and the hint of Inka on some edges.  I'm undecided how to proceed.  I don't want to hide the original patina and be accused of covering up problems, but I don't want to leave it in it's 44 year old state either.  Still pondering.  Luckily I have a minor oil leak that keeps the bottom oily and protected against rust.:D
