Description:
So, what is the scam here.

I have been searching for 2002 for some time and finally made it to the 2nd page of google search, and on the last page of oddle.com I find a listing for a 69 2002 for $4k; which was apparently posted October of 2016. (http://www.automotiveadbuilder.com/Vehicle/1969-bmw-2002-listing-6465.aspx).

I email and ask the guy if I can see the car and get a PPI done and he come back with the following (I am not dumb and not going to engage with the guy); but what is the scam and how can he do it through eBay)?  But I do wish I had just found the deal of the century :-)

My name is Jackson Hughes and I am stationed at Naval Base Great Lakes. The car is home in Billings, Montana. Two weeks ago somebody wanted to see it, inspect it. I came all the way home and he didn't even show up. That's why I choose to use ebay to reserve the car for who wants to buy it. If you want to buy it through their program, let me know and i will start a Buy It Now auction. You will make the purchase on ebay. You will deposit the money to them, and i will ship it to you or you can pick it up,it is your choice. You will have time for inspection and if you find everything ok,i will come to do the paperwork. After we complete the deal, you will contact ebay in order to release the funds to me.

So if I don't live in Southern California and don't want to fly across the country and stay in a hotel in order to conduct a transaction, how do I buy an '02. The link above suggests never to purchase a car unless you're physically present. There has to be a standard procedure for long distance sales.  Anyone have any experience with this?

See it alot. typically they ask for 3000 bux give or take. You'd be surprised at how many people bite on these ads

Always a risk to buy online unseen. I've had good luck and bad.

My standard procedure would be to have the seller take the car to a qualified BMW garage( if possible) AND  do a full on shake down including wet/dry compression checks...driving test..

AND tons of pics..and more pics...and even more pics. AND tons of communication...AND ask for all the paperwork.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
