He spent his entire adult life in the service of his country, OUTSTANDING job Marine you'll be missed.

I have to agree, he was an incredible test pilot prior to accepting the friendship seven mission. The first American to orbit the planet, it must've been an incredibly exhilarating and scary mission to be in space. He is right up there with Neil Armstrong in my mind, a true American Space program and patriotic hero.

He was one of our Ohio boys.

 

My wife and I were in high school in Ft Lauderdale--the day John Glenn's Mercury capsule was launched (1962) the principal let the entire high school out to sit in the football field bleachers so we could watch the rocket's contrail as it ascended.  And yes, from over 100 miles away we could see it in that nice, clear Florida springtime sky.  Quite a sight.  We were all cheering.
