1968 BMW 2002 in Mackville, WI

I saw this ad and thought I would pass it along.  A 1968 BMW 2002 in Manilla? (Original Polaris) over Tan Interior.  Early sunroof car (VIN 1660016), looks pretty complete and runs and drives but no brakes.

VIN 1660016 was manufactured sometime from January through December 1968 according to the BMW 2002 Club of Columbia's VIN decoder. It's a U.S. model. It could possibly be a 1969 model year -- if manufactured after July 1968. But whether it's a 1968 or 1969 model, the cars manufactured within the 1968 calendar year should have originally been equipped with the bulletproof long-neck diff and, of course, the early 232 trans with Porsche synchronizers -- silky smooth but wore out quickly. 1968, the initial year for the 2002, was a short year, so it would be especially rare and valuable if it were a 1968 model year. And I believe that U.S. 2002's began with VIN 1660001; if that's correct, this is a REALLY early 2002, the 16th U.S. 2002!

I'm always bullish on these early cars. But Polaris with a factory sunroof is particularly desirable. Seats are out of a '75-'76. Door panels are out of a '74-'76, possibly the same source as the seats. The original interior, assuming this was originally Polaris, would have likely been navy blue.

If this is as early as I suspect it is, its real value lies in an authentic restoration, not as M2 fodder!

Go check it out!

Regards,

Steve

I would be curious to hear how it looks in person. The paint has a little 'latex interior' look to it and rust appears to be an issue.attachicon.gifimage.jpeg

James,

You appear to have a photo, showing the right rear inner wheel well, that I don't see on the Craigslist ad. And, right, that's not good at all!

The white-ish paint is crap, and we're just hoping it's slowing down some of the rust, a bit. I wouldn't worry about its "latex interior" look -- it's going away. Polaris, certainly the original color, is metallic silver. In your trunk shot, original Polaris silver surrounds the white re-painted portion of the wheel well.

Steve

Steve-

I was indeed texting with the owner and received that photo. I completely agree that Polaris would be fantastic. I was considering it for a quickly-drivable project.

Is that your car? Did you buy it? Not trying to bash or misrepresent the car, just discuss it.

James

Not mine, no affiliation, James.

But I'm deeply interested in saving these rare early examples! And hoping it goes to someone who understands its significance.

Steve

What a project, but a great color combo coupled with a sunroof and such an early VIN! Wish I had the desperately needed deep pockets...

'74 Sahara/Beige 2002 HS car, long, long ago...

It appears to be s very early car, maybe number 16 overall. But the engine doesn't seem original. there are plenty of cars that need that kind of work- I would prefer to wait for one with a better story. For instance, matching numbers or stronger body or a Tii. Maybe that's just me...
