If you do one thing... epoxy coat the floors before you move one single thing into the garage.  I soooo regret not doing that when I moved into my place.  Now it's way too full of crap to go back....

Not as critical, but you could install extra lighting and electrical outlets while the garage is empty as well.

I bought a couple of heavy workbenches off my local Craigslist (tools section)... always something useful to find there, and way cheaper than new.  City/State resale warehouses are full of desks, benches, and shelving at cheeeeap prices.

I also like the heavy duty shelving.

Beer fridge.

Fan/Heater, depending on where you are and what season it is.

My garage is small and gets smaller every time I buy someone's parts stash... I'm done with that habit, for now.  Simply no more room.

Shamefully unkempt, here's my humble workspace

Ed speaks the troof.

Do a good floor.  I've had bad luck with epoxy - even professionally done epoxy.  I went to tile (www.swisstrax.com)

Do everything while it is empty (electrical, HVAC upgrades, lifts).

If you want compressed air all over, do it while the garage is empty.  I used a kit like this:  http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200484023_200484023

Try and stay organized.

Draw a picture before you start and get it figured out.

Garage journal is great. But you will have garage envy. Full shop vacuum is nice, as is a big metal sink. I bought used metal filing cabinets and office task tables and made a high bench and a low bench side by side.

It is in deplorable shape but that's going to change!!

You make do with what you have.  My 2 car garage at my townhouse measures 16.5' wide x 19' deep with 9' ceilings.  Very tight even for two old Bimmers.  No workbench, no large air compressor, no beer fridge, no lifts.  I dream of the day we move into a single family house with a large garage (or room to build one).

great thread... nice to see the Garage Mahals, as well as the "run-what-you-brung" kinda setups.

Another thought about the compressor, is to install it in the attic.  Saves on floor-space and is quieter. Plumb supply lines to a couple points, or use a hose reel.  Don't forget the condensation drain!

my compressor is under the work bench, boxed in with sound insulation.  still a little loud.  next one will be quieter and outside the shop.

Check on your local noise ordinance.  My neighbor has a compressor IN his shop and gets complaints from time to time (not from me.) One needs an acre+ for a true mechanic's mecca.

Ha.

At the same time, while Jim's garage has 1/2 the car capacity of mine, I've seen his work - and he is over 4 times the mechanic I am.

and an order of magnitude better picture taker.

yikes, that is pretty bad.  the stereo and my swearing working on old cars are far louder than the compressor... ;)

actually, the annoying neighborhood kids, lawn mowers, airplanes flying overhead and leaf blowers are far louder than any compressor.

the house we just bought is on an acre lot.  not worried about compressor noise!

the type of compressor makes a huge difference.  the cheap common oil less ones most folks use are LOUD!  the belt driven expensive ones are MUCH quieter.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
