Oil Blend Effect On Old Engine? Opinions Please.

IMHO, I've run 20w50 in my street 02 for years. Latest choice (last 10 yrs) being VR1, and its high ZDDP. And the high oil pressure is a positive trait.

I'd also never run 10w30 in an M10 -- unless it was a mild motor, I was seeking max gas mileage, it was an ultra-premium full synthetic - and I also used a zinc additive. I've helped numerous older Bimmer friends getting them to run a high viscosity, high zinc oil in these motors.

I do run 10w30 full-syn in my newer vehicles...

Majority of folks don't know the difference between a hydrocracked synthetic and a PAO synthetic.  One is garden variety Grp III base stock not intended for long life and the other is a Grp IV base stock for long life.  When you guys buy tires, do you buy them because they are the size you want, the rubber is black and it is mostly round or do you investigate further?

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

I have been putting the Brad Penn oil in the tii - for the ZDDP.  I have to go to an oil distributor for aircraft to buy it in Cincy.  Luckily it is close by, but it seems the Brad Penn is not available widely.  

 

I only drive it in fairly warmer temps so I use 20-50 in terms of weight.

 

I've heard Valvoline sells a product that has ZDDP in it and is fairly widely available.  Valvoline Racing maybe?

Well, actually, yes...

 

hee hee.

 

And the ZDDP only became an issue about 10 years ago- before that, the 'normal' grades of oil (maybe not 0-20)

all had enough of an additive package that a properly broken- in slider cam didn't have any problems with it.

 

Honestly, if you change your oil at conservative intervals (time and mileage) it's only the lack of ZDDP that 

MAY hurt the engine.  The bearings and pistons aren't that fragile in street driving...

 

...but I tend to use a good- quality high ZDDP oil and change it regularly anyway.

Ok, I used the screwdriver method for, like, 40 years, but the damned land cruiser engine was so long I would have needed 

a $40 screwdriver, so I bought the $8 stethoscope.

 

It works better!  I'm not lying! It has a diaphragm or something in it that does a far better job than Mr S-K.

 

Couldn't believe it.

 

Also can't believe that the land cruiser has a flat cam, but it seems to be what the problem is...

I always used a broomstick, sound travels through wood very well and you can stand away from the car to isolate the sound a little better, but yeah a stethoscope has replaced my broomstick so now I can sweep my garage floor again.
