I have wondered this too.  

 

They do make a clip that allows you to stick the sensor up the tailpipe on cars 'without catalytic converters', which would imply that a little farther back is okay.  

 

Seems like the wires would be a little short to reach the dash with the tailpipe clip.  It must be for dyno tuning.

 

I wish I had not spent twice the price of this sleek unit on the Innovate I have yet to install.  My name would be on this list.

After a Google, I found this wideband sensor installation guide that seems to have some good information. This was the only site I checked out but it should apply to our cars. They say that the sensor should be about a meter or 40" from the closest  exhaust valve.
