Decal Knowledge? Pictures?

My 73 2002, manufactured November 1972, has the decal with the manufacturing month and VIN number.

The TII  formerly belonging to me, manufactured 10/71, also had the date and VIN number on it.

That is the main reason I drive with rust on my doors, don't want to loose the decal...

Huh. Maybe they got so busy building so many cars that that little detail got overlooked.

OR... they put the responsibility onto the importer. That is more likely as you can see an "ink" version of the VIN and MFGDate in a previous picture in this thread

Door stickers got uglier as the years went on as well.

I suspect the dates and VINs were placed on the tags originally, but have since either rubbed off or faded. Given that the stickers warranted compliance as of the date indicated and for the VIN listed, to have excluded both would have been a violation. I can see the remains of the numbers 04/73 in my date area, and just the faintest image of a 2 in the VIN - everything else has vanished.

Ljtii: Your faded numbers were stamped on with ink. The previous style were perforated and would last as long as the decal. It would be an interesting story if anyone knew the reasons for the lack of numbers and discrepancies.

I'm going with my own counterfiet decal. Are the BMW police going to come to my door? Let them come! I too, will leave mine blank and keep the original "chunk" of door metal with the original black decal.

I removed my EPA sticker fairly successfully by using a razor blade and copious amounts of adhesive solvent (like rubber cement thinner, Wurth Clean-Solve, or 3M Adhesive Cleaner/Remover).  Start at one edge, work your way across one side, and then down the length of the label.  Be sure to test the solvent first (to void dissolving the imprint on the label).

Paul--admirable effort on your label design.

What about the Euro models? I know they did not have the EPA sticker under the hood, but did they have the door decal/sticker?

Bill,

have never seen an original BMW decal on a door of any german car. Except the former orange and now white stickers on the black coated spare doors when you buy them new.

Best regards, Lars.

nbcbird: I can't believe you were able to remove your decal, intact. I thought I had patience.

I did not use thinners, as I thought it would DEFINITELY remove the text on the decal. I only used heat and hot water. I got 1/2" into the edge and the perforations started to seperate (as designed).

Anyway I'm having my replica decal printed. Pick up tomorrow.

This thread has been very insightful. In all the years that I've owned my car I never knew that my VIN and MFG date should have been on the door. I also didn't know that they perforated the decal to hinder removal.
