I just got a 1973 TII, with around 54 k miles, I have no AC, no sunroof. Would putting a ragtop diminish the value of the car. And also what would be the best color to paint for search a car. I thank you in advance for your input. Regards.

you bought the wrong car

if you are thinking about converting your present

cage - don't unless your bugeting $30,000.00

for side rocker and floor steel reinforcements,

dashboard and firewall-to-front frame rail reinforcements,

and the rag top itself . You'll then have a 'converted car'

with far less value than you invested. AND a heavier,

slower car toboot.

buy a ready made BMW 02Vert , or move on to more

properly engineered newer BMW Vert bodies which take body flex,

cowl shake, crash safety into consideration.

...well if you must take a SawsAll to the roof-

at least use Quality Parts / kit from an established

supplier to car makers :

and it will still ruin the cars 'originality'

which carries a lot of weight with most knowing

buyers

Try to keep the car as original (Paint, sunroof etc...) as possible to hold it's value unless it's really bad. If you want a car to modify, buy a regular 2002 and leave the tii alone. If you need to sell the tii to fund a modified project, I'd buy the tii!

FWIW, there is this car for sale in Los Angeles. The guy wants $20k for it. It was chopped and re-enforced. it has some nice parts about it, but it is basically a car that is 35+ years old, has some goofy modifications, some nice mods, but i could never see myself paying that much just because it is a convertible. It would probably be worth about $4-6k as a hard top (IMO).

Get the proper shocks for the springs you purchase.

From a purely practical cost-versus-return standpoint, a sunroof conversion buys you very little. The sunroof on these cars isn't all that big. It's not like a Porsche Targa where, with the targa top off, it's almost like a fully-open car.

In contrast, the a/c installation, while not cheap, buys you a cold car. And if you are concerned about originality, there's little to be lost with an a/c installation (as long as the car isn't hacked up) because no 2002 had factory air anyway; they were all dealer-installed (though there were different versions: Behr, Clardy, and Fridge King). Read on this forum and you'll find examples of the three different consoles that went along with the different installations.

Regarding the color, I'd say tell everyone to go stuff it and paint it whatever color you want, but the value of these cars is getting high enough that that's bordering on irresponsible advice.

Nothing wrong with lowering it; Ireland springs and Bilsteins are a well-traveled road.
