banning members

this needs to be addressed again

there is one member on this forum that everyone agrees is a problem troll.

but beyond that, there will always be, periodically, problem members.

with the internet, posters seem to get away with behavior that, in real life, they never would. sitting behind a computer gives some an inflated sense of ego to be able to do as you wish without consequence.

IMHO that needs to change

you want to see a forum that works steve?

go hang on rev 3

members get banned all the time for behaving poorly

maybe others want to chime in but some that post here ruin it for a lot of us, and the no-ban policy, while having worked on the faq for a long time, is not appropriate any longer

I completely understand your desire to see a ban. However, personally, I'd love to think that we can manage this as adults. Like many, I come to the FAQ not just as a source of information and inspiration, but also some level of comoraderie. In the 6 years I've had my car, I'm proud to say I've made some great friends, and I owe a tremendous amount of that to this forum. Additionally, logging on to the FAQ is an "escape" for me, a few brief moments of solitude from our normal hectic lives which are already plenty filled with agression and hate. In my humble opinion, those things have no place on the General Discussion forum.

My request would be something more like a pledge:

1. If you want to spew some sort of agenda, agression, or general displeasure to another member, either do it directly with them or on the political forum; consider it the "smoking area" where the toxic gases don't have to harm the innnocent bystanders in the "non-smoking" area.

2. If you have the maturity of a grown adult, and wish to participate in the General Discussion forum, PLEASE recognize that if you are bringing the hate to the forum that we have all seen here recently, you are RUINING the pleasure of the forum for so many others. We really don't care what your issues are, we just don't want them splashed in front of us on computer screen where we are looking to read about cars!!! If you can't find sufficient compassion for those you are deriding, at least try to find enough respect in your heart to not ruin it for the rest of us.

Consider me signed up for my own pledge right now. Thank you. Grover.

I agree to an extent. but unfortunately, some cannot act like adults and do not know their boundaries.I also suggest that nobody should be allowed to post unless they are registered users.

If you can not behave as an adult, you should not be allowed to associate with the adults. Everyone knows the standard.

Seems to me that the worst offenders could care less what kind of damage they cause; in fact that's likely what motivates them. It's like anything else - the rule followers will usually adhere to the rules and the... well, you know.

Well said and very true.

If you don't ban people who suck, people who don't suck will leave.

I concur - I haven't had a "run" in or highjacked thread in a long time, that said the first or next time that happens will be the last for me on this board. Just sayin.

this is because they have nothing to lose Bob. Does anybody here know JhC personally?

As someone involved in ADR (alternative dispute resolution), I'd like to add another thought to the already well expressed sentiments of others. In my experience, unreasonable people of all stripes and persuasions succeed in controlling situations and conversations only through the tacit consent of reasonable people who feel compelled, or are compelled, to engage them. This is true on every level of human social organization. Nothing is a more compelling deterrent to short term negative behavior than short term social isolation, and nothing feeds short term negative behavior more than feedback, especially negative feedback, as it provides the fuel for more interaction.

Unless you're willing to engage in sufficient interaction to fully uncover the core cause of misbehavior and "cure" it at the cause, you can only get someone to modify negative behavior by making the consequences unbearable. More interaction doesn't accomplish this. No interaction does.

Whether the decision is to boot off the offending parties, or simply treat them as if they didn't exist, the main thing is not to feed the behavior. The most effective message, however it's delivered, is that unreasonable behavior means you don't get any interaction, period.

Or...

I check this board almost daily, despite my posting being sporadic. I've been here since day one and remember the nightmares of the Roadfly days. The "Ban Free" policy is something I think helped make this board what it is today and something I commend Steve and Rob for maintaining for so long. So many boards get ruined by 'ban happy' mods.

My suggestion, borrowing a page from Facebook (sorry), how about a "hide user" function? Click on the user that you wish to never see input from, click "hide"...and they are gone from your life for good, but others who may find something of value in their presence can still see their contributions.

Just a suggestion that meets in the middle, and in no way is a vote of support for JHC and his/her/it's actions...JHC will hopefully be the first and only person I click "hide user" on.

My 02 cents,

-shad

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
