I wouldn't say your day was a total loss. Dudley's car got some attention and those chocolate chip cookies were delicious (thanks to Janice!). After seeing that new Vette, I drove home and my neighbor across the street just bought a new 128i Convertible from VOB in Rockville for his wife to drive.

wellll, dudley and clay motored out of my driveway and then called 5min later. the #2 plug blew out of the head oof dudley's car. guess it was stripped. they drove home (loudly) on three cyl....

It was only a matter of time. Strange how that plug wouldn't go in.

It was only a matter of time. Strange how that plug wouldn't go in.

I wonder if a heli-coil wasn't in the spark plug hole to begin with. The compression tester could have messed it up.....just a thought.

Measure and noodle out where to cut the upper oil pan, mounted it to a board to make it easier to align in the radial arm saw, then found out friend with saw was out. Delay on cutting…

2.25in must be removed.

Put in a grommet donated by Grice for the O2 sensor

Then worked on the false floor for the ECU. Cut some 1x square aluminum stock to make two layers.

Bolted together. This will be through bolted to the firewall. Bored big hole in outer one to get socket through to tighten nut.

JimG showed up at precisely the right moment to hold the screwdriver on the other side of the firewall, and it is all bolted up. There are separate bolts sticking out to attach the alum foot panel to. Panel waiting to be cut on same saw as the oil pan..

Finished bracket to hold oil pressure sensor to strut tower.

Hacked one of the exhaust brackets off the 74 and cleaned it up. Will have to weld or bolt to back of 75 for turbo muffler. Will hack the other one off too for the front.

Ok, got my act together and hacked up the oil pan to match the new massive lower pan.

Used a radial arm saw to get parrellel slices with the pan mounted to a 2x12 to make the placement consistent.

Then made first cut.

Lots of little cuts. Lowered the saw about 1/16th in between passes.

Then lined up second cut intentionally shy of the mark.

Bolted to lower pan to check how much more to cut off. Measured again using same offset technique as first measure

And sliced another 3/16th in off the main pan.

With bolts in, can just barely get a piece of paper in the gap.

Next step…cutting some sheet aluminum to use to fill the big gaps exposed between the two pan pieces, then off to welders.

Marshall, I hope you know that you aren't supposed to be putting holes in your oil pan on purpose! ;)

You could have probably used a carbide tipped saw to cut the aluminum pan. Aluminum is softer than many woods, so saw blades with teeth have no problem going through it. I made close to 30 cuts through 3" square aluminum stock and various sized extrusions for my CNC router build.

You know, I am telling you this now just in case you ever decide to install an S14 with a custom oil pan in your garbage disposal or whatever.

Its all lookin' good.

Cut up some scrap aluminum plate in shapes to fit the gap between the two oil pan parts.
