I expect a ride in 2 weeks. I'll bring a squirt bottle full of water!

... Is Innovate still using those headphone jack type connectors? If so, I suggest you do something to secure them. They have a tendency to back out.

Cheers,

Oh wow that thing is coming together! When is first crank? Tomorrow? (Today as I write this). If so, can I come join the fun?

BTW... I think that your car's air filter has a nicer raincoat than me...not cool at all.

Best part of today was that I now have a clean shop floor…

Started off with me trying to get the top of my diagnostic connector. Simple unscrewing motion. Nope. Stuck. Where I have it makes it impossible to get any leverage to twist. Off came the strut bar and airbox….again. got top of connector. Reinstalled everything.

Then powered up car to see if ECU had any codes in it. Plugged in my Peake Code tool I have been using on my E30’s and E36’s. nothing. Hmm. Looked up E30 M3 in the Peake manual…no listing. Checked pinout. No pin in the peake tool for the power pin in the connector! Argh.

On to next task. Jim G arrived and we installed the muffler. Bolted up ok.

Muffler

Then Bill R arrived. Engine filled with oil and coolant/water wetter. Pulled fuel pump fuse and cranked with starter to build oil pressure. It took a LONG time to get any. We were worried. Even took remote pressure sender head off to check for oil. After a lot of cranking, it finally built some oil pressure. Then plugged fuel pump fuse back in and turned it over looking for fuel pressure. It came up slowly. Tweaked the AFPR to get 43psi. Cranked starter some more looking for “start”. Battery started dying. We had been cranking a lot and I only have that 15lb Braille battery… Put charger on and tried again. It started, sort of. Ran like crap. Bill and/or Jim said, “gee, sounds like the plug wires are out of order”. My reply, “naw, I checked that many times when installing!”. So we checked the wires. DOH! 2 and 3 were reversed! Reconnected and turned key. Vrrroom!

BUT….AFR on the Innovate gauge and AFR on the MAXX AN software 4 points off. MAXX AFR started to rise fast, Innovate AFR dropped like rock and car died after about a minute. This happened repeatedly. Much head scratching and computer parameter changing occurred. Played with the idle air screw a bit (out to 4 turns) and then balanced the TB’s with the Carbtune. Was checking the oil temp when my foot felt hot and jim uttered something loudly and shut the car off. Coolant hose joiner had blown off, dumping 2 gal of hot fresh coolant and a bottle of water wetter on the shop floor. ARGH!!!! After much swabbing the floor was mopped up and then cleaned and we called it a day.

A couple of hurdles before I can make it to vintage.

-need coolant hose couplers for 1.3 in (34mm) ID rad hose.

-need to figure out why AFR reading different

-need to sort out the cold running rich issue

-need to tune the dang thing!

A lot learne today, but a long ways to go.

I just like the fact that you used the word "swabbing" in reference to cleaning up the epic mess.

I can believe that you have gotten so far so fast, it looks great. As soon as I am finished with my summer training here in Norfolk I will be out there to help and see this thing run.

All the best,

Chris

ahhh, but for the simple days of tuning dual dcoe45's....it was all so easy then!

DSCN4912.jpg

was doing some wbo2 programm settings checking tonight. can't start it without coolant though.

ordered some rad hose couplers from a speed shop and a some from mcmasters in a different size.

still searching for an exhaust seal ring that is not too big (turbo, left) and not too small (NAPA part, right). need one that is just right!

There are O2 sensor voltage and fuel type input areas in the Innovate software somewhere. Have a look.

Tuning your car has now become a similar process to tuning the color output on your printer. Yay progress!

I still think that it is odd that you have to re-calibrate the LC-1 every month. That is really ridiculous if you ask me.

You looked at the DCV scales also, right?

thanks. that is what i was doing last night. all configured for gas/lc-1 output. Maxx is config'd for the same lc-1 7-23 afr input.

Wow, I love how you 'hid' the ecu and other electronics behind the carpet. I may have to borrow that idea when I start wiring my MS stuff up.

The couplers from mcmaster-carr arrived today. (thank you Jay for reminding me about them) Dang that was fast! Actually fit pretty well so I put the rad hoses back together and added almost two gallons of distilled water to fill it up.

DSCN4914.jpg

Lesson learned, don’t take the easy way out and use pvc pipe. In the heat it actually “melted” and deformed, effectively lessoning the tension and allowing the hoses to slip off. Just say no to pvc. Duh…..

Back together.

Then bled the clutch and brake systems.

It was too late to start it up and play with tuning, so will try tomorrow.

Um, evo injectors and no afpr.

IIRC, the Innovate software has settings for fuel type and the DC voltage input range ex the WbO2.

Pages 13 and 14 here. I think the output signal may be causing a false afr reading.

DCV = ?

are you running LC-1 and MAXX too? besides the 2.5, how modded is your engine? wondering how useful it would be to "borrow" your .ant tune file....

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
