I did the valve cover on my e30 325 m20b25 motor recently and it turned out great. I used stock paint from Napa in a spray can. I prepped the valve cover well getting the oxidation off with a small wire brush in a dremel around the graphics and a slightly larger wire brush in an electric drill at the other areas. I sprayed the whole thing black and let it dry a couple days and went back with a 4 1/2" angle grinder fitted with a "brillo" pad and hit the graphics I wanted to show as brushed aluminum. Careful not to hit any low spots, I buffed off the paint and then clear coated the valve cover with satin clear. It's been about 9 months and looks real nice still, even in MI where we have real weather and four seasons a year, not anywhere as harsh in the Central Valley where you are and I used to live.

you can spray pait it, harley Davidson makes some crinkle that is favored. Or powder coat for the ultimate durability.

I've used Krylon Wrinkle on two valve covers, intake, velocity stacks and a battery tray with great results. The v/c's were done more than 5 years ago and still look fine. Just make sure you get all of the oil and contaminates off before you paint. Finish with a sanding block across the lettering and the whole thing should cost you 6 bucks.

Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words CD! The e30 cble and krinkle coated e21 battery tray are on the workbench; just looking at battery options. The Sears battery in there now is 8 years old and shows no signs of weakness but would have to be vented. I was thinking of an optima red but the price is a bit rediculous imho. The other thought was an Interstate with the vent going to the oval plug near the trunk hinge; thoughts on that?

As for the carb, it's been on for a month or so, replacing a 32/36 with the C.D. tuning perscription. The torque from 3 to 4500 is GREAT but the car now struggles to get to redline. With the 32/36 there were no problems. Also hard rights make the car stutter and lose power. I rebuilt the carb after a trip to Pierce Manifolds, and set the float using the spec in the Haynes/weber book but i suspect this may have something to do with it. I am a beginner with the dcoe, so i expect it'll take some time and patience to get is dialed. I'm also on the first round of jetting; 145 mains, f16 emulsions,190 air correctors. Tii dizzy, Stahl header, good compression(176-190) unknown cam and pistons 121t head valves at.008.

Any advice on the jetting folks? Sorry to hijack the tread!

if the motor pulled redline fine with the old 32/36 and this is the same distributor with same timing setting? then I would lean in this direction:

recheck your float level - and set to the higher fuel level side

of the spec

FUEL PRESSURE ? tell us what you have

(2.7 - 3 psi we hope )

Main jets try 150

Air Correction jets try 175 or 180 - and report back

I didn't lead you wrong with the 32/36 settings

it's easy I got my paint at a Motorcycle shop. Left the cover out in the HOT florida sun for a few hours to pre heat it then used a hair dryer to heat it after a very heavy coat of the paint. Before painting I also sanded and polished the raised ridges & lettering and taped that off to give a nice shiny trim. Very easy to do with a little time & effort.
