It can be done on the M10 with the engine still in the car, assuming you have a normal oil pan and can jack up the engine enough to work the pan out between the block and subframe. Then changing the rod bearing is no big deal.
Before attempting, loosen or remove engine mounts, trans mounts, loosen or remove exhaust at the flange, remove distributor or at least the cap, remove carb linkage, check for hose or wiring binds, radiator hoses, etc.
If you suspect rod bearing problems oil starvation generally gets journal # 3 first, whereas numbers 1, 2 and 4 don't seem as susceptible to damage in my experience.
