  1. It all comes down to how bad the rust is and how much patience you have in fixing it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Check the fan belt if it is loose... This can happen. Also the alternator bushings... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Aardvark Engineering charges $325.00 for a shortened balanced drive shaft for the 5 speed conversion, Rebuilt Driveshaft (+ $325)
  4. 02 driving season is officially open in Chicago the Temperature today will hit 70 degrees in some parts of the area. Today Apr 1 Sunny and warmer66°Lo 52° Yea You west coasters will never know the joy of the first warm days.
  5. To do the 5 speed conversion the parts all in a kit from Aardvark come to 825.00 or so then a drive shaft, then a 5 speed transmission. Safely just under $2000.00 without any labor. http://www.2002parts.com/bmw/5-speed-trans/5-speed-kit.html The Automatic transmission is actually an advantage if you are switching to a 5-speed as the tunnel is slightly larger, which will make the transformation easier. The current tranny seal leak is not an issue if you are putting a 5-speed in the car. You will also need a peddle box and pedals....
  6. There is a rebuild kit for the valve. It has all of the internals and I am sure Blunt has it. It is much cheaper than buying the whole new valve. I know others who are creative and may live in warmer climates have just retro fitted a plumbing valve that they manually turn on or off.
  7. Just drove mine to its winter home in Michigan on Friday. Backed it into the garage made sure the sta-bil was in the tank at the last fill, the tank was full and disconnected the battery. Hopefully it will winter well in the garage with a lawn tractor to keep it company.
  8. Esty +1 On this board and very knowledgeable lots of options and expertise. I have one of her carpets right now in the car.
  9. +1 for the S14 Bosch starter. Ordered mine from Blunt find him here on the board. You can replace without removing the alternator. In my ca it made a huge difference. You probably want to renew your battery cables at the same time and clean up the grounds. The difference is massive, it turns over much faster and the car starts very easily.
  10. I had the same issue. I originally bought new clips at Bavarian auto. Turns out they are a slightly different size and they do not work. I returned them. I bought the real BMW ones and they work fine.
  11. As far as where the ground strap is mounted that is where the old one was... So I cleaned off the hole and put it back. Thanks for the advise. Hey sorry that my car is not immaculate, but it is my daily driver all summer. The engine bay does need a bit of attention though. It is a 1974.
  12. Well I bought new Battery cables from Blunt a few weeks ago to go along with the new S14 starter I bought from him, and installed this week. One of the nice side effects is that my temperature gauge that wondered about, up when you stepped on the brakes, up when you turned the headlights on is now rock solid. What a nice side benefit. And might I add in this age of supplier angst on the faq how nice to deal with Blunt who have the knowledge to ship what I need, do it fast and always impress with their knowledge.
  13. From Ireland Engineering website: These are the parts necessary for a Getrag 245 5-speed conversion for your BMW 2002. This transmission is typically found in E21 320i's from 1977-09/1982. -DRIVE SHAFT - Shortened, rebuilt, balanced, and assembled with new center bearing. Option 1: 3-Bolt Nose (depending on the 245's output flange) Option 2: 4-Bolt Nose -Shift Plate and Selector Rod kit - Comes with complete shift plate, rear support hardware, foam isolator pad, shortened selector rod, and selector rod joint and dowel. -Transmission cross member and mount - Comes with HD rubber mount, or optional urethane mount. -Short Shift Lever - or later (post Feb. 1974 build date) shift lever. -Speedo Cable (longer) -Stainless Steel Clutch Line setup - Includes the stainless steel flex line along with the appropriate hard line. -Clutch Set: Pressure plate, disc, and throw out bearing option 1: 228mm (good time to upgrade to a 228mm from 215mm system [just need the 228 flyhweel]) option 2: 215mm **Throw out bearing - If for whatever reason you don't want to replace the entire clutch setup. Option 1: 228mm Option 2: 215mm -Guibo (flex disc) Option 1: 6 hole (for 3 bolt drive shaft) Option 2: 8 hole (for 4 bolt drive shaft) -Brass Clutch Pivot Pin: NOT required but The factory clutch pivot pin is made from plastic and wears over time. Replacing the pivot pin with the brass pin while the transmission is out is a good idea. -Clutch Slave Cylinder: The Clutch Slave on the getrag 245 mounts to the outside of the bell housing. 14. I put my IE stanless exhaust on about a year ago. No rattles or banging. It is such an improvement over the non stainless systems. My old exhaust was paper thin and falling apart. The sound is great, but the important thing is it works and was easy to install.
  15. I had similar symptoms when the wire that controls the fuel pump at the ignition was loose.
  16. Just replaced mine this weekend. Pulled the old ones out with a needle nose. Measured the old one cut the piece that I bought from Blunt Tech to size, and fed it down just like others mentioned with the window a third open. It is so nice to not hear clunks when you close the doors, and to get rid of one more rattle when driving.
  17. I had been having an intermittent starting issue where the engine would crank very slowly, and sometimes so slowly it would not start. This is a 1974 2002. After living with it for a year, I took the plunge spoke to Blunt and ordered a Bosch S14 starter. Wow who knew how nice a starter that cranks faster would be? Car starts instantly, 3 cheers for Blunt and steering me towards a lighter and faster starter.
  18. send Sales BluntTech <sales@blunttech.com> an email and ask him. Are you familiar with realoem.com you can look there and see if parts are still available directly from BMW?
  19. I had good luck with Aardvark. They offer a 5 speed conversion kit and you can buy a weighted and balanced drive shaft as an option. They were really good to deal with.
  20. Is this where prices are going? http://www.schmitt.com/viewimage.asp?ID=5315 Have a look at this car advertised by Daniel Schmitt and Company St Louis MO. A 1976 with very low miles and they are asking, $22,900.00
  21. I waited for the IE stainless exhaust and have been very happy with it.
  22. i am out today also in Chicago's north suburbs. It feels great to be out again. It will get to 50 degrees here today.
  23. As I remember their was a clip type washer on mine if you look closely after you get the bolts out. You had to pry that off with a screwdriver. Look closely.
