  1. I had a very similar thing happen to me personally - posted it in a similar thread last year here: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,324400/highlight,cj8/
  2. Thanks Anyone here running the 1156 LED replacements experienced brighter light / more visibility
  3. I followed up on a msg here on the board mentioning 'Oznium' and sent them a question and post it & their answer here for info: They were very quick and seem to have some interesting off the shelf items: We've just answered your question about our High Intensity LED Flood Your question and the answer are now displayed live on the product page: http://www.oznium.com/retail-led-floodlight Your question --------------------- I have an older car with notoriously small taillights and brake lights and intend to modify the brake, turn and rear lights to LED. - Are these brighter than a normal 12v brake bulb? - The housing for the combination brake/turn/reverse/tail light is aluminum and pack all four separate bulbs into a circular light split into triangular segments with a center. Do I have heat issues - ie could the heat of the LED melt the plastic lens segments? - Last - for a center mounted brake light in addition to the rear assembly how many could be mounted/wired in series or paralell? Our answer --------------------- These are not brighter than a normal 12v brake bulb. These get hot, but I've never seen them melt plastic. You can wire an unlimited number in parallel. It wouldn't make sense to wire in series.
  4. Agree Board -> Blunt -> Bell BMW (for OEM-available parts, MIC Brian Francis) They have a cumbersome online ordering system which requires you to open an account and have the correct BMW numbers handy (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do) but it works and turnaround is one week. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=searchCatalogOEM&siteid=26
  5. It was stolen because 10) It will appear in the next edition of "Repo" since it looks suspicious 9) It was taken into protective custody by BMWNA since the paint job has an eerie resemblance to the BMW Hybrid 8) Vigilantes from the CCA have a clandestine 2002 Hilfe-Gruppe 7) CARB is now impounding violators 6) "XXL" Magazine photoshoot needed a prop to go with a retro Afro hairstyle piece they're working on 5) The Ducks mistook it for a missing mini-Zamboni 4) The wheels fit a Honda, the rest of the car was thrown away 3) The paint scheme is attractive for a made-for-cable movie about LA car chases and will appear on the 11 pm news momentarily 2) A FAQ'r recognized the spoiler and flares as unshipped merchandise he'd paid for 1) Someone read that article about that E30 homemade rally car and has taken it to Juarez to prep for the next Baja
  6. http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2010/03/report-mercedes-to-eliminate-maybach-brand-by-2014.html... Resurrected in 2002 as a way for Mercedes to take on rival BMW’s newly acquired Rolls-Royce brand, Maybach has been a sales flop and now Mercedes appears ready to finally admit as much. According to a report by AutoExpress, Mercedes will give the Maybach models a slight update (set to be revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show) this year before winding the brand down towards 2014. Why 2014? Well, that just happens to be the year that the next-generation S-Class is due out, meaning that Mercedeswill then look to take some S-Class models further up-market. The 2014 S-Class should also get some impressive technology and AutoExpress claims it will be one of the most technologically sophisticated machines ever built. The rather tabloid-like outlet is also reporting that Mercedes has even approved the Human Machine Interface (HMI) as seen on the F800 Style concept. The HMI system works somewhat like something you might have seen in the Tom Cruise film Minority Report, using a screen and a camera to turn hand movements into actions, such as zooming in on a map with just a gesture of the hand. Sound a little too futuristic? Well, 2014 is still a long way off.
  7. My suggestion is to work to your strength You have what looks to be a very rare '71 in that it is not only undisturbed but in fantastic shape except for the body. The interior is A-1 and the exterior trim is all there and in great shape from what I can tell. This alone is worth a lot. Inside looks new and most of all, correct which means you have the potential there for a high-quality restoration. But these cars have no frames and being unibody with blind voids which have no way to drain moisture & tend to rust out from the inside. Please get this car on a lift and send pix. You can purchase fenders, 'frame rails', floors, doors, subframes and nearly anything you need individually but this gets expensive because it each part gets removed, refitted and welded in or hung. With what you have I would look around for 'rollers' - there are a few on the board now, from California or elsewhere - that are "rust free" or with minor rust issues. You would be looking for pre-74 "roundies" such as what you have. I and Mac (and others) are both in the midst of a resto on a '72 which needs far less than yours and will cost about you would pay for a 3-4 year old 3-series (sure he will agree) but we are both aiming for our cars to look original so theres additional burdens. Just to leave you on an optimistic note, overall these are relatively simple and very durable cars. Don't be worried about lifting your carpet, or anything else. Most anything can be fixed. Good luck!

  9. Is that a Fram filter I see peeking out from underneath that immaculate engine?

  12. May as well have a couple of fresh mounts handy if you're hoisting the engine off them just in case. Degrease the whole area first makes the work a good bit less unpleasant. If you have a good heavy magnet handy sweep the pan for metal as well. Take a look at the trans mount and guibo while you're at it and remember to work safe under the car!
  13. Thanks - I tried to get ahold of Eric Saturday but no answer and he's not in the phone book. I'll hunt him down as well today I used to do MB heads at Bobs 20 yrs ago - I can't understand why I didn't try them again - will check today thanks again.
  14. Thanks very much - not very far from me.
  15. Still looking for a recommendation for a good quality machine shop anywhere near/around Brewster NY or Danbury CT say 25 mile radius for the '72 head and block (needs liners) thanks
  16. I hate to say it, being in the middle of the "80/20" '72 tii resto ...but If you pay a reasonable price for a running, repainted tii like this say maybe dunno $4-5K and then put in another $10K you still will have only one half the car you could have by taking that "Schwartz Edition" off that guys hands in Colorado (see the long thread in the for sale section) for what he's asking. Don't get me wrong or think I have buyers remorse but take a good hard look at my "rust free" '72 that was stored in a dry, heated workshop under cover for 20 years and sleep on it. The powder coating bill on this alone will run $1500. I have spent more than 5K in new parts from Bell & Blunt, and I already have a warehouse of parts . As an example of the fun you can expect: BMW is actually paying the body shop 4 hours of labor to correct the new front panel it shipped us which must have been assembled by a drunk wielding a tack welder. Not that the panel that was there was too bad - but if you want perfect and not bondo - well you have just made (another) $600 decision.
  17. Still less expensive than whatever is on the lift behind it. Does this qualify?
  18. For the '71 tii Need recommendations for NY/Ct/Northern NJ for head etc etc thanks
  19. Yes - well that makes two of us. Perhaps my suspicions were aroused somewhat when we pulled the interior out and found a PLYWOOD PANEL epoxied into the left inner rear panel. Michael explained that when the original repair was done the heating and softening of the sheet metal got out of hand and this was done as an (idiotic) attempt to resolve improper welding. Anyhow the entire panel is being replaced from the parts hoard. Since we can't get accurate dimensions, we are using the '76 Chamonix as a template, parked next to the '72. Simple but (hopefully) effective for clearances.
  20. Used to take the VDO oil and clocks out of them in the junkyards and put them in the '02 in those 2 gauge clusters. Fit in well. They came in a couple of trims but they could never catch me on the street. Colors were very similar - I remember they had a very Malaga color, silver and red, all close to the BMW colors. Wheels look like they were copied from the Skylark and the interior was nowhere as well finished. If I'm correct they we sold out of Buick dealers. But good luck - you have to ask your mom "Why this car?" there's probably a good story there...
  21. Check out: http://www.greiner-gmbh.de/scheelmann/index.html Most likely a lumbar pump inflator? Get a number off the thing and send it to them. They'll tell you what it is and when it was made I guess. They also have cover material.
  22. Sean/Bryan Thanks for the input and will follow up at least for the port and polish/gas flowing. It makes sense and does not show on the outside so it will still be stock. Also agree on the flywheel and crank which makes sense since there is less weight and inertia. Guess you have to stay on the gas more. Will let you know about Poland as soon as my plans are set.
